iTunes Review

San Diego’s Soft Pack originally dubbed themselves The Muslims, but changed the name after becoming “exhausted” by the “ignorant ... things that came out of people’s mouths.” This record was the The Muslims’ debut, and still serves as an impressive introduction to the band of either name. Though it was branded an EP, it has ten songs and packs a wallop: the songs are tight, pummeling, guitar-and-drums creations that feed on the crumbs left behind by the Velvet Underground and the Modern Lovers.  This collection has the edge and energy of their great first single, “Parasites” (unfortunately not bundled here, but available on iTunes), and is imbued with more garage-flavored, vintage grit than the official Soft Pack debut, where the band takes on a slightly more pop tone. On both records, however, the band’s simple approach — marrying those clanging guitars and thunderous drums to the clear, boyish tones of singer Matt Lamkin — clearly gets the job done, and then some. This is just great rock music, by any name.

Raw

I Love this album!! The band is great with an awesome raw sound.. I fell in love with the band as soon as I heard them on MySpace. I was beside myself when they played at Schuba's in Chicago. The energy and electricity they have in the album comes alive in their show.... A great mix of pop/punk/surf... I cant wait to hear their next album!!

let's leave out the best song?.... PARASITES!

Great album. But why not include Parasites?

Jihad incoming!

Hell yeah, The Soft Pack, formerly known as the Muslims, have finally hit itunes! Buy the album, see them live, f*ckin rock on Trevor!

Playing smart but simple rock that harks back to ‘60s garage, ‘70s punk, and ‘80s college rock, the Soft Pack feature vocalist/guitarist Matt Lamkin, guitarist Matty McLoughlin, bassist Dave Lantzman, and drummer Brian Hill. The band formed in San Diego in 2008, when Lamkin and McLoughlin decided to fill the void of straightforward, catchy rock bands in their town. At first, they called themselves the Muslims, and even released two October 2008 singles, Parasites/Walking with Jesus on I Hate Rock...
