Interesting Mix
I wouldn’t consider 'The New Normal' to be Phil's strongest album, but it's certainly home to some of his strongest songs. Listening to it as a whole can be a bit of a bit of a ride, but it manages to remain relatively cohesive at it's core (though still somewhat overwhelming, musically). The ballads (Call, Every Knee, & Carried Me Home) are instant classics, showing incredible growth in Phil’s song-writing abilities. The album is difficult to review, because the songs are so varied. There are the amazing ballads, then a couple of pretty solid songs- Go Home, DWYL, & Pink Elephant, and then there are some that you’re not quite sure what to do with- Shout, New Normal, The Best Thing (I like this track, but the Austin Powers-esque sound kind of weirds me out), & You Belong To Me. Although they're decent songs, when measured up to the others I just think they're kind of confusing. I wish he would have held off on the release just a little bit longer and replaced some of the tracks with another song like Call or Go Home, because I really think that just replacing one "good" song with a “great” one could have made all the difference. Regardless, I still think The New Normal is an undeniable step forward- if not for the growth shown in Call, Every Knee, & Carried alone!
SOUNDS LIKE LOVE
You carried me home, when you rolled the stone away. Phil is amazing. But Yet god is even greater. And I would like to thank phil for spreading his message at sounds like love and ever where else life takes him. His new song Carried Me Home 400 teenagers, I one of them, sang with Phil at a Youth Christian retreat in Minnesota. For the first time sung live 400 teenagers sang their souls out as one, in front of hundreds as one, with one soul, one mind, one heart, one nation under god.
AMAZING IN CONCERT!!!
I have attended church all my life and have never seen someone lead worship before like Phil Joel can. He is very moving in his worship and his songs are so powerful that they really bring us youth to life. Ever since AQuire the Fire where he lead worship my view of worship has been forever changed.
