Album Review

Hawkins' first album for DGC Records is a beautiful, understated record that easily ranks with his finest works.

In Honor.....

Ted Hawkins was one of the best blues/soul singers to walk the earth from the 70s to his death in the mid 90s. Strange Conversation is in my honest opinion one of the greatest songs of that milenia, pure magic. It sends chills down my spine every time I hear it. If you are cautious about buying the ablum, buy that song, you will not be disapointed.

Stunning performer

My friend and I started up a tiny little record store back in the early '90s, and the one and only promo that any label sent us was Strange Conversation on cassette, and it blew my mind. This guy had one of the sweetest voices I have heard. I played that cassette over and over, actually skipped a few meals so I could get the whole cd. One night, my wife and I happened to see that he was playing in town, so we jumped in our car and scored a couple of tickets. Ted Hawkins came out with a guitar, a milk crate to sit on, and a small piece of plywood that he tapped out the rhythms on. I can remember how he kind of shuffled onto the stage, a very tall, lanky man with shock white hair and beard. He put on a performance that years later, still sends chills up my spine thinking about. I can remember telling my wife that he could be and should be a huge success. Two weeks later, we heard about his passing on MTV of all places. What a shame more people didn't get a chance to see him perform. If you are a fan of Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Mahalia Jackson, you will not be dissapointed.

Ted Hawkin's finest album

I found this CD in the bargin bin in Rota, Spain. I had no I idea who this guy was but I gave it a try. Simply put, this is an incredible album. His raw, soulful voice and simple guitar arangements really hit the core, with powerful emotional impact. He reminds me of the best street performers in NYC and Washington, DC. It was on the streets that Ted's music was discovered. I have all of Ted's albums. Each on has one or two great songs, but no complete album beats the Next Hundred Years. From the somewhat playful "Green-Eyed Girl," to my favorites "Strange conversation" and "Ladder of Success," they hit all of the emotional chords. Each song is a delight, and this album remains one of my top five albums from any genre of music.

Overseas, he was a genuine hero, performing for thousands. But on his L.A. home turf, sand-blown Venice Beach served as Ted Hawkins' makeshift stage. He'd deliver his magnificent melange of soul, blues, folk, gospel, and a touch of country all by his lonesome, with only an acoustic guitar for company. Passersby would...
