Very good collection
It's no surprise to find artists like Torae, Skyzoo, Blacastan and Black Opera on this collection; as they tend to pop up on just about any and every track and album that finds itself removed from mainstream consumption. Royce da 5'9" is always a welcome addition to any track; in fact his best verses usually happen on guest appearances ("Band Practice" with 9th Wonder, "Assassins" with Jean Grae and Pharaohe Monch) as opposed to his own tracks.
What endears me most to these tracks is that the rhymes are not just dissociated four-line ejaculations of a clever play on words or rewarmed simile (which are the banner and standard of most if not all widely consumed rap that gets radio play these days). Instead, you can really see and feel the manner in which the lyrics in most of these songs are latticed together, from both a poetic and a progressional standpoint. You can really experience the artists' words and thoughts moving your mind through the track - not pushing it, as is the case with some underground rap that tries to hard; nor dragging it, which is what we see in popularly consumed hip-hop; but merely escorting your mind along a path of alternative contemplation and self-reflection.
They did it again!
I always look forward to these compilations…another great installment!
This is dope!
