iTunes Review

In 2010, John Hiatt is one of rock music’s grizzled veterans, having begun in the early ‘70s as a singer-songwriter who slinked into the new wave and eventually found his way as a roots-rocker who could do time in the alt-country movement. His studies in Americana led him from the heartland to the coasts and back again. Broken hearts mend, but the body eventually drags you down. Or at least it did on 2008’s Same Old Man where Hiatt decided to slow down and feel the age in his well-traveled bones. The Open Road sends Hiatt back on the defiant path, ignoring whatever his aches and pains may be and raising a little hell with songs that roll off his silver surly tongue with solid vigor. The poignancy of “Go Down Swingin’” lets you know he doesn’t always figure to win but he’ll die trying. “Like a Freight Train” swings with the weight of heavy blues. “Wonder of Love” features terrific electric guitar and Hiatt’s always tortured growl that makes love sound like a dangerous spot to be in.

The Open Road

There are certain actors that without fail I will go see their movies. Robert Duvall, Robert DeNiro, Chris Cooper, Tommy Lee Jones, Edward Norton to name a few. There are certain musicians that without fail I will buy their albums without hearing a single note beforehand. Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Van Morrison, Lucinda Williams and John Hiatt. I am rarely disappointed and certainly not with 'The Open Road.' I love this Album. Classic, Straightforward and soulful at it's core.

Great stuff wrong genre

This is really good music, but the genre is any thing but alternative. It is much more blues or country rooted. Good music is good music but anyone looking for new music in a certain category might miss this one.

John Hiatt's sales have never quite matched his reputation. Hiatt's songs were covered successfully by everyone from Bonnie Raitt, Ronnie Milsap, and Dr. Feelgood to Iggy Pop, Three Dog Night, and the Neville Brothers, yet it took him 13 years to reach the charts himself. Of course, it nearly took him that long to find his own style. Hiatt began his solo career in 1974, and over the next decade he ran through a number of different styles from rock & roll to new wave pop before he finally settled...
