iTunes Review
On The Orchard, Lizz Wright's third full-length release, she continues to meld her own originals with tracks by other great performers, creating a beautiful work inspired by everything from folk to gospel to jazz. The sexy “My Heart” moves with a swaying, samba-soul, Wright’s vocals backed by guitarist/singer (and co-writer) Toshi Reagon, creating an easy, undulant flow. “Song for Mia” is powerful and resonant, recalling the haunting emotional style of both Tim and Jeff Buckley. The gentle and winsome “Another Angel” gives Wright’s longing vocals plenty of room, accompanied mostly by spare acoustic guitar and percussion, while the sensuous and hungry “I Idolize You” (written by Ike Turner for Tina) brings R&B into a very contemporary light, with slithering snare drums and slinky guitars luring the listener into its embrace. Her cover of the Led Zeppelin ballad “Thank You” is stately and elegant, and her treatment of Carol King’s “I Feel the Earth Move” (an iTunes bonus track), is equally reverent and affecting. A crowning moment may be the gospel-flavored “Hey Mann,” written by Toshi Reagon’s mother, Bernice Johnson Reagon, for her own group, Sweet Honey in the Rock. Glorious.
Customer Reviews
Sunkissed Lyrics, Her Voice is Naturally Sweet.
There is something warm and caressing about Lizz Wright's voice that seems to create fragrance in the naturalness of morning breezes and evening air. Since I had first heard her voice on the Salt album, I was enraptured. She had me. She seemed to sing melodies and words from that corner of my soul that refused to be forgotten. And this album as well as her sophomore album Dreaming Wide Awake does the same. Although I must say that even though I can count on the velvety sweetness of LIzz's voice and music, I wondered what other flavors would sound like under her melodies--perhaps the sudden tangyness of a tune that I could take an afternoon jaunt to and play in the sun. But be assured--after listening to the whole album with particular attention to "My Heart", I Idolize You", "Speak Your Heart", "This Is", Thank You and I Feel the Earth Move, one would be content to find solace in the luxurious juicyness of Ms. Wright's voice...and anticipate her next recordings like the harvest.
deliciously fragrant
this artist voice is a rich and vibrant as the earth of africa, as calming and soothing as the salt of the sea a necessity for a balance to the soul.
Lizz, Lizz, Lizz, Lizz, LIZZ! You've done it again!
Prediction: one very long, very positive, critically acclaimed career. With material like this, don't expect (or settle) for anything less. The style of songwriting is your most personal so far, and combined with the powerful, yet silky-smooth voice, the effect is mesmerizing and uplifting, even on the 'sad' songs. Well done!
