Album Review

Just three weeks after the U.S. release of the Beatles' swan song, Abbey Road, Creed Taylor ushered George Benson into the studio to begin a remarkably successful pop-jazz translation of the record (complete with a parody of the famous cover, showing Benson with guitar crossing an Eastern urban street). It is a lyrical album, with a hint of the mystery and a lot of the cohesive concept of the Beatles' original despite the scrambled order of the tunes. Benson is given some room to stretch out on guitar, sometimes in a bluesy groove, and there are more samples of his honeyed vocals than ever before (oddly, his voice would not be heard again by record-buyers until he signed with Warner Bros.). Don Sebesky's arrangements roam freely from baroque strings to a full-throated big band, and Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Fortune, and Hubert Laws get some worthy solo space. Yet for all its diversity, the record fits together as a whole more tightly than any other George Benson project, thanks to his versatile talents and the miraculous overarching unity of the Beatles' songs. One wonders if the Fab Four liked it, too. ~ Richard S. Ginell, Rovi

A Classic Record from a Classic Musician

One of the greatest playing tribute to one of the greatest bands. I've been listening to this record for 30 years, and it has a way of continuing to bring life to some of the best songwriting ever! George Benson, of course is a gem.

Professional Beatles Covers, the BEST!

Mixing cool jazz, funky rhythms, and a smooth voice for an outstanding album. It has the structure of pop and the unexpected changes of jazz. Simply amazing album, I've heard many Beatles covers by artists (even Wes Montgomery) and they are nowhere near Benson in terms of taking the Beatles music to the next level. Someone in the stdio (Benson?) had a fantastic vision of this entire album and Benson is probably one of a few musicians who could pull it off. Band backing him up is top notch. The $4.99 this is being sold for almost an insult as it's value cannot be measured. Beautiful music.

Ridunculous.

A musaked and bowdlerized version of Abbey Road too slick to be sincere, too insipid to be ironic. Whether Benson was totally insincere or simply failed to give forethought to Abbey Road (as is demonstrated by The Other Side's 1969 release date - directly on the heels of the original) doesn't make much difference. Serious errors such as destroying the sequence of the Beatles' concept, arbitrary omission (such as Maxwell's Silver Hammer or Polyethene Pam, say) and dampered-down crooning completely neuter Abbey Road's edge and relegate it into lame lounge music that sounds ten years more dated than the original. Docked one further star for turning "I Want You" into the Peter Gunn theme.

George Benson is simply one of the greatest guitarists in jazz history, but he is also an amazingly versatile musician, and that frustrates to no end critics who would paint him into a narrow bop box. He can play in just about any style — from swing to bop to R&B to pop — with supreme taste, a beautiful rounded tone, terrific speed, a marvelous sense of logic in building solos, and, always, an unquenchable urge to swing. His inspirations may have been Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery...
