Album Review
Originally recorded in 1988 on the small Scarlet record label, The Painter debuted John Boswell's softly romantic solo piano stylings to a small but dedicated following of fans. Tracks like "Child's Eyes" and "James and the Giant Peach" introduce the grace and sincerity that would become the hallmark of his later recordings. Remastered and repackaged in 1994 by new age label Hearts of Space, The Painter enhances the portrait of John Boswell as an evocative pianist.
Customer Reviews
Boswell...The Painter...pure serendipity!
Believe it or not, I bought this CD at a used CD store, not knowing what I was buying, but figuring that for five bucks, it was worth a hear. And was I surprised by what I heard!...here was this musical artist who paints with the piano the way I want to paint with a brush. Every track was incredibly evocative -to the place that I found myself listening to each of them over and over again, never growing tired of the musical craft I would re-discover with every listen. I enjoyed this album so much that I eventually purchased every piano album Boswell had made. All are definitely worth a hear (in particular, TRUST). Still, if forced to play the "If I had to choose only one album per artist" game, for John Boswell...it would be The Painter. His debut album is by far his best offering to date, and if you have not gotten anything by this man yet, The Painter is THE album to purchase. Still, I can't help but wish that there were one or two more piano solo albums in the man (LOVE was made in 1999). Currently, he is working with vocalist Babbie Green (two albums so far--but that's another review)...so, it's probably wise not to hold one's breath. So buy this CD...and be pleasantly surprised!
Brilliant! 24 years later and still exceptional.
This album withstands the test of time. I have been listening to this on cassette tape since it came out in the late 80's. I finally got around to uploading it onto my iPhone to happily discover it's compositions have aged gracefully. So many other artists of the time sound like period pieces hearing them now. Glad to find an exception to that. Truly beautiful inspired music.
