Album Review
The Phoenix is Marcus Johnson's tenth recording and features 11 brand new songs from both new and established songwriters. The keyboardist/composer/producer offers a solid and balanced set filled with urban grooves, contemporary jazz, R&B and hip-hop with a little help from friends — saxophonist Phillip Martin, vocalist Frank McComb and guitarist Stanley Cooper, among others. Johnson has developed a real talent for smooth jazz as well as having a hand in getting inside the groove and soul of his R&B cohort Raheem DeVaughn's smash hit titled "Believe." Johnson's collage of wide-ranged and interesting material is capped off with the radio hit "The Road to Los Suenos," a real smooth burner with vocals by Nikki Gonzalez that should have the club scene happening with its thumping evocation of R&B and ebullient rhythms. This song is hot and a sure sign that The Phoenix's track list is, too. "Urban Trust" kicks with its strong, funky basslines and rocking guitar solos. But it's Johnson who surprises the most on this one with his notable retro elements and sophisticated riffs that keep you hooked. Strong sax playing from Phillip Martin on "The Journey" makes it a real keeper, while Frank McComb's smooth crooning on "Love" will have you under his influence. Marcus Johnson has never forgotten his core audience but The Phoenix is sure to garner more international fans at the other end of the musical spectrum because of the reworked Latin funk fusion. Recommended.

SmoothJazz.com Review
The fearless leader of Three Keys Music and Marimelj Entertainment, jazz keyboardist/composer Marcus Johnson, is a modern day Renaissance man… with mad skills. He’s parlayed his keen sense of contemporary, urban cool into a recording label and entertainment company and despite music industry challenges, he’s celebrating the release of his 10th solo album appropriately titled THE PHOENIX. Marcus somehow has managed to meld all of his talents and acumen into one very accomplished career. He’s known for his showmanship onstage and his music speaks for itself with its smooth grooves, urban spice and jazz sensibilities. THE PHOENIX is a highly listenable, tasty recording that features eleven original compositions with huge “neck factor,” Johnson’s term for “how listeners start swaying their necks to the beat once it connects with their souls.” Raised in Washington, D.C. Marcus Johnson’s political agenda is to deliver the jazz to the people, he says, “I love jazz and there’s a huge demographic of folk out there that I intend to expose and let them know that I’m their man!” Right out the gate, THE PHOENIX rises to fantastic heights with “Side Steppin.” The big surprise this summer at Smooth Jazz radio, was the album’s third track… the groovalicious “Road to Los Suenos,” seemingly out of the blue, it’s taken control of Smooth Jazz airwaves and charts. I’ll also direct your attention to the urban glide, “Believe,” the soulful vocal “Love” featuring Frank McComb and the cruisin’ jam “My Caddy.” THE PHOENIX is a musical celebration of love, faith and determination.
More Bounce
This album has some nice bounce. Nice urban bouncy feel with an upbeat sound. Never heard of this artist, but definitely hope to check him out live if he can make it out to Cali and stay a little longer than last time. Great job Marcus!
Addicting
Hooked from the very first time I listened. Every song is worth listening. Great selection of artist accompanying Marcus Johnson.
