iTunes Review

As with Black Mountain, Stephen McBean's other band, the Pink Mountaintops borrow just enough from the annals of rock to lure the listener before injecting their own successful sonic experiments to avoid any retro rehash. But where Black Mountain sponged Sabbath, the Pink Mountaintops negotiate Neil Young’s territory crossed with the weird sounds trying to get out of McBean’s head. “Bad Boogie Ballin’” is a title that may seem like it’s veering toward AC/DC, but the opening cut sounds steeped in Trans-era Young (sans Vocoder) as a hyperventilating accordion matches drum machine beats to produce something that sounds like it could have been forged by Canadian robots in Tom Waits’ boiler room. “Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy” is a spooky serenade sounding as eerie as “Revolution Blues” but with sexy results (every song here muses on sexual themes, by the way), though “Sweet ‘69“ is the standout, sounding like “Hey Bo Diddley” being sung by Chan Marshall’s long lost twin brother.

Watching the Detectives

After the scene with Cillian Murphy and Lucy Liu making love, I went on a mad search for what I now know as 'I (F**k) Mountains'. It was unbelievably difficult but so worth it. The entire album is like a soundtrack to a carefree and untroubled life. Buy it, and don't regret your decision at all.

not just for tripping...great sound for those who have good taste in musical talent not just catchy jingles...."Rock and Roll Fantasy" is just plain delisciuos....

Unique

This album reminds me of what would be the soundtrack playing to Layne Staley's last days doing drugs and painting art. Very dark and very druggy, and that's not a bad thing.

The "trippy country meets stoner rock" of Vancouver's Pink Mountaintops is the brainchild of Stephen McBean, who is also the singer/songwriter/guitarist for Black Mountain, which was formerly known as Jerk with a Bomb. McBean's solo project was also known by another name, One Easy Skag. He began playing with Jerk with a Bomb in the late '90s, and the band issued three albums and a 7" under that name. By late 2003, both Jerk with a Bomb and One Easy Skag were rechristened with their mountainous names,...
