iTunes Review
Tired Pony is a solo project by Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody that was recorded with an impressive cast of musicians including fellow Snow Patrol member Iain Archer, Peter Buck of R.E.M., and Richard Colburn of Belle & Sebastian. Though less grand and anthemic than much of Snow Patrol’s work, these songs are similar enough to appeal to fans of Lightbody’s full-time band. Overall it’s a mellow, introspective album dominated by low-key, lovelorn songs like “Northwest Skies,” “I Am a Landslide,” and “Get On the Road,” the latter featuring vocals by Zooey Deschanel. There’s a bit more punch on “Point Me at Lost Lands,” “Dead American Writers,” and the feedback-laden “Pieces,” but they still match the forlorn feel of the album just right. The music, set against a gauzy ambient background, is largely acoustic based with occasional fiddle, mandolin, and pedal steel adding texture to the forlorn mood. With solid songwriting and often gorgeous musicianship, The Place We Ran From is a fine addition to Lightbody’s discography.
Customer Reviews
Better than I had hoped for.
The "official" review above is partially wrong.
Are Snow Patrol and R.E.M. really "indie rock"? I agree with the royalty part, though. :)
Also, Gary Lightbody -- who might simply have the one of the ten best voices to emerge in the last decade -- does not "handle...all of the vocal duties," which makes me wonder if the reviewer actually listened to the whole album. Tom Smith of Editors provides his hypnotic baritone to "The Good Book" while M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel provide turns at the mike. Iain Archer supplies a wonderfully subtle lead with "I Am a Landslide."
The gathering of musicians for this recording originated as a concept by Lightbody to record a country album. Instead it became something much more than country, with roots, Americana, pop, indie, whatever you want to call it. The instruments throughout the recording (including guitar, piano, organ, pedal steel, mandolin, fiddle, drums, bass, and more) create almost tactile soundscapes. With no complete songs and just a smattering of lyrics, melodies, and ideas from the Snow Patrol lead on day one, the fact that this album was finished in something like ten days proves the sheer genius and musical ability of these musicians.
I heard an interview recently of Lighbody and Buck that was done in the UK prior to their big London show (the band's first of three gigs - two in the U.S. shortly after the album came out here). They talked about how natural and comfortable the process was. They mentioned how mistakes, off beats, and humanity was recorded. The songs were performed once from beginning to end--what's on the album.
I'm a big R.E.M. fan (I was a teen when they were still on an indie label) and Snow Patrol and Editors are two of my favorite bands of the last ten years. For me this is like a nirvana, but just listen to these songs and I am sure that more than one will capture you in some way--visceral, instinctual, emotional, something.
The album may be called "The Place We Ran From," but to me it is a place I am running to. It is better than I had hoped for upon hearing of such a collaboration. I'm still disappointed that it was released here in the States two months after it was released in the UK, but I suppose SP is not as big here as there-- and this is more Lightbody's project than anyone elses. However, Peter Buck has not dismissed the idea of a second album and more live performances, despite a new R.E.M. album in production.
The Place We Ran From
