Undiminished "Power"
Superb specimen of chaotic, twisted, brutal 80's angst. Growing up in the age of mix tapes, I'd always include a few of these tracks to introduce friends unfamiliar with hardcore to its essence; this is quintessential hardcore. "Power of Expression" played a huge influence on the subsequent explosion of youth crew bands in the mid 80's and desert rock bands of the early 90's. Like many of their SST label mates, Bl'ast! defied strict categorization and transcended musical boundaries, ultimately leaving them on their own little island outside the contemporary 80's mainland of formulaic thrash, crossover, and retro-hardcore. Like Black Flag's trudging synchronicity, Bl'ast! had a tight cohesion that made their live shows legendary. This album has a very "live" feel to it.
Originally released on Pat Dubar's (Uniform Choice, Unity, Mindfunk) Wishingwell label in 1986 and re-released by SST the following year, this - their debut, saw Bl'ast! in its rawest incarnation as a five-piece. From the opening distortion of "Time to Think" (in which "Holocaust" by M.A.D. can be heard) to the closing apocalyptic aftermath of "Nightmare," this is a classic from start to finish that has been imitated by many, surpassed by few in sheer intensity.
