Album Review

Following a pair of self-released discs, The Premiere is the major-label debut of Christian rapper Soul P., one of the rare explicitly religious hip-hop artists who potentially has a mainstream career waiting for him whenever he wants it. The lyrics — which are positive but nondenominational, and only very rarely at all preachy — are not what one first notices about The Premiere, but rather how self-confident and talented Soul P. is as a rapper. With the same blend of cockiness and humility that's Kanye West's stock in trade, but without the touch of crazy genius that makes West so compelling, Soul P. is a fleet-tongued, rhythmically gifted rapper who knows his way around a chorus. Bright and inventively arranged tunes like "Whoa Whoa!" have instantly memorable hooks and ear-grabbing samples, and even lesser tunes like the metaphorical "I'm the Street" are cleverly constructed enough to engage the listener even over the comparatively weak rhymes. Too long by at least 15 minutes or so, the best parts of The Premiere nonetheless make a strong case for Soul P. as an artist to watch.

Nice beat...but needs to refocus...

"Whoa Whoa Whoa!"...let's rewind this Soul P...I listened to the samples, seemed good so I bought your album. Unfortunately I was welcomed with "I'm here, i'm there, I'm everywhere..." Hmm...your not everywhere dude, that's an attribute of the Lord, and only the Lord. And please, give some credit to Christ...sure I don't know what road you traveled, but man, your only where you at because of Jesus Christ...try not dropping your name so much in your next recordings and flow with diction about God Sweet beats, but it ain't worth it if lyrics ain't giving FULL glory to God... Buy it if you want, but don't expect meaningful lyrics, just party scene beats and flow...I recommend picking up something from some dudes who have brought themselves lowly in worship and spit for glory of God...check out Lecrae, Trip Lee, Flame...and the rest of them who have something to say in their music.

So, so, so judgmental

People who don't like this dude need to remember that He is flawless like the rest of us, just because He doesnt say exactly what a Christian "says" then he shouldnt be putting out Christian music. At least he is out there trying to represent Christ to the best of his ability, and as brothers and sisters I think we should support him instead of picking apart every single thing he says or doesnt say! Peace...

Don't hate....

I love to see all of the "youth4christ" people who judge a dude trying to make his music, and who are so outta touch with modern music. I'm a christian so I live my life by example, not beating people to death with bible verses in a song. And if I made a rap album, i would hope it would sound this good. quit policing music, and appreciate it for what it is....a great album finally. keep up the great work Soul P.
