Album Review
While Soul Coughing always possessed an air of inscrutability, Mike Doughty has spent the time since the band's implosion making his life an open book. Whether he's connecting with fans through more personal lyrics, the Internet, or his memoirs, Doughty's willingness to let fans take a look behind the curtain makes him feel like the natural evolution of the singer/songwriter. On The Question Jar Show, Doughty takes this concept a step further with a series of live performances where audience members were encouraged to write down questions for the singer to answer on the spot. The questions are largely lighthearted queries like "Would you rather trip an old lady or kick a puppy?" or "What's your favorite Cyndi Lauper lyric?," creating an interesting juxtaposition between the intimacy of a two-man acoustic show (with Doughty accompanied only by cellist/bassist/sidekick Andrew "Scrap" Livingston) and the random minutiae revealed by the questions put forth by the audience. It's in this kind of setting where Doughty thrives, with the sparse arrangement putting the focus on his twisting, poetic lyrics while the time between songs gives the singer the opportunity to draw audiences in with his laid-back charm. Songs like "Madeline and Nine" and "Down on the River by the Sugar Plant" really shine when they're stripped down to their most basic elements, allowing their yearning to take center stage in the absence of a full band. The Question Jar Show is one of those rare live albums that is a great listen for diehards and non-believers alike, allowing fans to hear different takes on some of their favorite songs while giving anyone who may have lost track of Doughty in the post-Soul Coughing era the chance to get reacquainted over a few songs and some light conversation in a way that most double-live albums wouldn't allow.

Mike's Best Live Effort To Date!
I've been an ardent fan of Mr Doughty's music going on 15 yrs now. He's gone from psychedelic poet trip hop to warm, acoustic campfire busker, bridging the gap easily with a knack for the vernacular and can turn a phrase (made up gibberish to insightful prose) like no other. This collection is the best live effort we've gotten from him so far. The sound quality is excellent, and he's never sounded better live vocally. It's less vocally hit or miss, and more confident, even through the trademark screw-ups that somehow always come off making him more down to earth and likable; at ease with his own imperfections. The questions from "the jar" are amusing, and sometimes insightful, but always entertaining. After a few listens, you'll want to boil the set down to music minus the questions, but it's a cool concept and great that they were included for those of us unlucky enough to not witness the spectacle up close and personal. A great span of Doughty tunes are mostly from the last few releases, and I'd love a few more oldies mingled w/the rest, but that doesn't take away from the release at all. Can't miss with this one - buy it. And while you're at it, pick up his new book, which is a hugely entertaining read that covers Mike's youth, school, drugs, time w/Soul Coughing, and beyond. That's January money well spent on both deserving products. Thanks again Mike.
The Soul Coughing Marvel
Musically Mike Doughty can do no wrong. His music is both original and from the soul.People should take the time and divert from the main stream.Take a look at how a real artist does things. This is not mass produced crap.I applaud you Mike.
The question jar rocks
I caught this tour and it was one of the most innovative shows I've ever seen. Mike had the audience write random questions on scrap paper before the show which were placed in a jar on the stage. About every three sings, Mike would draw questions from the jar and answer them. It was silly, introspective, ridiculous and mildly educational. This is a must have album for and Doughty fan!!
