iTunes Review

Citizen Cope, a.k.a. Memphis-to-Brooklyn songwriter Clarence Greenwood, has always thrown hip-hop backbeats into his music and it’s no different on 2010’s The Rainwater LP. Whether it’s the sound of beach waves crashing to shore (“Healing Hands”) or the whirling winds behind “I Couldn’t Explain Why,” the austere industrial clink of “Jericho” or the quick-stepping disco pass of “A Father’s Son,” Greenwood never leaves the dance floor far behind with a little hip-hop in his pocket. Elsewhere, he finds other grooves to break on through to his other side. “Off the Ground” settles in with a calypso beat. “The Newspaper” slow-dances its way with an electric piano. “Lifeline (Barefeet Version)” settles on his acoustic guitar and introspective lyrics to deliver its message of hard times all over. “Keep Askin’” further speaks with the acoustic guitar leading the way. Greenwood’s vocals lay back but underneath that mellow exterior is a man taking notes of the imbalances around him.

Cope nails it yet again

I've been waiting for this album for about 18 months now and it's well worth the wait. With all of Cope's records, several tracks always draw me in at first glance and I have to work my way through the rest. But as history repeats itself, with his ability to really draw me into the stories he's telling, every song eventually grounds itself into my brain. I purchased it this morning and have already listened all the way through about 5 times and I can't get enough. Although initially it seems lacking the catchy hooks of CGR and Every Waking Moment, I really get the impression that a lot of love was put into this record. Some new sounds, new stories and concepts and experimentation, I can say that this record is going to usher in a new era for Cope's career, especially since he's taken the plunge with his new label. I hope we'll continue to enjoy his work for years to come.

Congrats Clarence!

Citizen Cope is both a person (singer/songwriter Clarence Greenwood) and an acoustic-driven band. Born in Memphis and raised in Washington, D.C., Greenwood is the leader of the group, and he steers the band's soulful sound by serving as keyboardist, guitarst, lead singer, DJ, songwriter, and producer. Greenwood first broke into the music business by appearing on albums by Maryland-based rapper Basehead (1993's Not in Kansas Anymore and 1996's Faith), and he used that momentum to issue his first Citizen...
