Album Review

And how! Austin tackles standards such as "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and "They Can't Take That Away from Me," and succeeds brilliantly. Her version of Comden, Green, and Bernstein's "I Can Cook, Too" is enough by itself to make this a pick.

Oh How I Wish This Was Remastered!

The sonic level on this cd is the same as all eighties releases, cd's were still in their infancy when this album was originally released. "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most" was unavailable on the vinyl version of this album. Don't expect lush strings on this set, this is an album of standards arranged with electric equipment and studio trickery giving it a contemporary sheen. "Stockholm Sweetnin'" is Patti overdubbed performing this song as a vocalese singing the melody as written by Quincy Jones. Patti performs all the vocals on this album, backgrounds too, and is joined by David Pack on the Cole Porter chestnut "True Love." The album is opened by the whopping Broadway tune "I Can Cook Too" made famous by Nancy Walker and Patti's performance is inpired by that recording. In fact the liner notes denote the original versions of each song that Patti covered and makes this album a tribute to her musical inspirations.

The Real Me

This entire (album) cd is absolutely incredible. I love r&b and always liked Patti Austin, but as I got older I began to appreciate and listen to jazz alot more. And when I heard she did her own rendition of Smoke Gets In your Eyes, I absolutley had to hear it for myself and to my surprise, I loved it and every single cut on this album and had a new found respect for Patti ever since. I have 7 favorites from this album, but they are all grrrreat!

Patti Austin will forever be one of the greatest female vocalists in music who is largely unappreciated. However, anyone interested in knowing more about Patti musically just needs to listen to this CD, without a doubt, the masterpiece of Patti's career. While thie songs are are covers of classics, Patti succeeds in standing above the crowd of her peers that have recorded covers of these classic by making these songs her own and in my opinion, creating signature versions of "Smoke Gets in your Eyes," "They Can't Take that Away from Me," "Cry Me a River" and the centerpiece of this set, "How Long Has the Benn Going On?" I dare anyone to listen to this CD and not appreciate the brillance that comes from this outstanding project.

A professional since the age of five, Patti Austin was a protégé of Dinah Washington and Sammy Davis, Jr. A 1969 single for United Artists titled "Family Tree" cracked the R&B Top 50. Austin cut her debut LP, End of a Rainbow, for Creed Taylor's CTI label in 1976, followed by Havana Candy in 1977 and Body Language in 1980. She sang lead vocals for Japanese koto player Yutaka Yokokura on "Love Light" in 1978, did a duet with Michael Jackson on "It's the Falling in Love" for Off the Wall, and sang...
