iTunes Review

After the breakout popularity of their self-titled major-label debut, Hoobastank returns with a similar, if tighter, set of songs on their second release. Along with the crunching guitar riffs and a fully loaded rhythm section, there’s extra attention paid this time around to the big, impassioned voice of singer Doug Robb, whose vocals rip through the mix with crystal clarity. Similarly, the vocal harmonies also receive some nice studio sheen, and the good backup singing sweetens the already strong melodies. With “What Happened to Us?,” “Lucky,” and the hit single “The Reason,” the band shows more subtlety and range than on its debut, and these (relatively) slower moments help to play up the attack of loud rockers like “Out of Control” and “Let It Out.” The Reason proves to be a solid sophomore effort.

by Sigh..............

The Reason has remained the only song that most people care about, but even though the Reason is a good song, it's not nearly the best one of this album. In this album, Hoobastank ran on post-grunge with occasional nu metal, and their best tracks are, not suprisingly, nu metal. Standouts- Same Direction, Out of Control, Never There.

Where the hell is the title track? I thought "The Reason" was the only reason people bought this album.

There is something for everyone in this album, if you like heartwarming music, it's in there, if you're the older brother who wants some solid rock, it's in there, even if you like a little bit of punk, it's in there. This album is an essential in every alt-rocker's collection, the mix of emotions and a clearly heard message. I got this as soon as I got it and even now it feels right.

While the heavy alternative sounds of Tool and Alice in Chains were primary influences on Hoobastank's sound, the post-grunge quartet tempered the gloomier elements of such music with a suburban California groove and an eye for accessibility.
