Album Review

Despite the fact that Seven and the Ragged Tiger couldn't match the unrestrained pop/rock ebullience of 1982's Rio, Duran Duran put three of the album's singles in the Top Ten, taking it to number one in the U.K. Even though "The Reflex" gave the band their first number one hit, there's an overabundance of fancy glitz and dancefloor flamboyancy running through it, unlike "New Moon on Monday"'s straight-ahead appeal or "Union of the Snake"'s mysterious, almost taboo flair. It's apparent that Seven and the Ragged Tiger's content has the band moving ever so slightly into a danceclub arena, with the songs leaning more toward their ability to produce a sexier sound through electronics and instrumentation than through a firm lyrical and musical partnership. Even the unreleased tracks trade Duran Duran's handsome edginess for a shinier sound, heard mainly on "I Take the Dice" and "Cracks in the Pavement." It's here that Lebon and Taylor's personalities begins to get overshadowed by the demand to produce a more synth-snazzy and fashionable style of music. Although they may have turned their songwriting down a notch in order to succumb to the pabulum of synthesized pop, they didn't relinquish every aspect of their genius, and when they do deliver, it's bright, energetic, and effectual. Duran Duran's new direction eventually gave Seven and the Ragged Tiger double platinum status.

A Classic and only the band's third album

I read lots of strange things these days. Some people write about 80s music as if they were there. Mostly these are people too young to have experienced Duran Duran as teenagers. Their comments give them away, often containing strident opinions based on something other than experience. The sensation that was Duran Duran in the 80s has yet to be beaten by anything since then. Their third album was absolutely a smash, earning the band millions and proving they were going to continue to make popular music beyond Rio. It seemed every third song on the radio was a Duran Duran tune in those days. Many fans considered this album superior to Rio for having steered into fresh musical territory. It was a remarkably popular effort. To fail to understand its worth is to have missed the decade. Everyone who was there knows how huge the band was--love them or hate them, This album satisfied the need among their fans for more of their stylized and pleasing pop. It is a fundamental if you're into the band so nice they named it twice. It is also very good 80s music.

I bought this cassette tape for my friend Ann in science class. She was completely into Duran Duran, she was also dating my best friend Robin at the time. I guess she never figured out I had a crush on her.

Pretty Good...

I love this album - even though I'm only 17. I first heard Duran Duran in my American Pop Music class while we were studying new wave. I found that I liked the sound, so I came to iTunes and found this. Here's why I like it: this music puts me in a good mood. It's not dirty or hateful, and I find it way better than today's top hits. Most of the songs have some deep thoughts in them, while "The Reflex" raises my energy level and gets me pumped. Duran Duran might have a new fan!

Duran Duran personified new wave for much of the mainstream audience. And for good reason, too. Duran Duran's reputation was built through music videos, which accentuated their fashion model looks and glamorous sense of style. Without music videos, it's likely that the band's pop-funk — described...
