Album Review

One of the more noteworthy "jangly guitar" acts of the 1990s, the Rembrandts were off to an enjoyable start with this debut album. Melodic and congenial but far from wimpy, such pop/rock as "If Not for Misery," "New King" and the small hit "Just The Way It Is, Baby" set the tone for the L.A. duo's career. A variety of influences from previous decades can be detected — everyone from the Beatles to the Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash to the Everly Brothers. And yet, this CD never sounds dated, and has a definite freshness to it. With so many rap, metal and industrial acts expressing deep pessimism in 1990, the optimistic, socio-political idealism of "Everyday People" (not to be confused with the Sly & the Family Stone classic) was a refreshing change.

i'll be there for you

this album is not good at all! the only good song is i'll be there for you.

Solid Collection...

Probably not the songs I'd pick exactly, but it's hard to go wrong with the Rembrandts. Let's face it, they've put out a lot of great songs over the years. It's nice that they threw in a few Great Buildings songs. Too bad I'd can't buy them separately. And it's too bad they just don't reissue the whole Great Buildings album. It's a classic. Heck, they could have just made this a "History of Danny Wilde" collection and thrown in some songs by The Quick. Nice!

More than "I'll Be There for You"

Listen to "Johnny Have You Seen Here". You might recognize it, I do recall this being on the radio for a while when it first came out, though that was a while ago, even before "Friends".

Even though they became best known for recording "I'll Be There for You," the theme song to the smash NBC sitcom Friends, the Rembrandts were actually rather successful back in 1990 with their self-titled debut album, which produced a Top 20 hit in "Just the Way It Is, Baby." The duo of songwriter Danny Wilde and Phil Solem, both originally in the Los Angeles band Great Buildings, forged a Beatles-tinged brand of pop/rock with ringing guitars and fresh harmonies that found favor with radio programmers...
