iTunes Review
The Renaissance is just Q-Tip’s second album in the ten years since A Tribe Called Quest called it quits. Q-Tip handled the production duties himself, and this lean collection of tracks adheres to his old-school values but still sounds remarkably fresh, and even innovative. “Gettin’ Up” and “Won’t Trade” incorporate classic soul samples on songs that represent Q-Tip at his buttery best. Few rappers have a better ear, and it is to Tip’s credit that tracks like “ManWomanBoogie” and “Dance On Glass” work as well in a club setting as through the headphones of the young hip-hop faithful. Now pushing 40, Tip’s flow is as swift and charming as it was twenty years ago, and he easily sidesteps playing the grumpy old rapper, a trap that has befallen many of his golden-age peers. The Renaissance demonstrates that a lot of time and acumen can make an offering that adeptly blends the old with the new.
Customer Reviews
Is this the birth of a New Movement? Tip can still "kick it"!!!
Words cannot give this album/artist enough credit. Just buy the dang thing and enjoy GOOD MUSIC!!! I bought the album blindly simply out of respect and to support Q-Tip and ATCQ. But after a couple of roations my head is steady bobbing to the good beats and great lyrical skills not to mention the voice. Good music, not something typically associated with hip-hop now-a-days is it? Hard to find, yes, but it's not impossible. Hopefully an established and classic artist like Q-Tip can help bring more attention to the movement. Here are my two-beats (aka 2-cents) on a few somewhat obscure artist I currently bump on my iPhone: J-Live, Pete Philly & Perquisite, Strange Fruit Project, Bavu Blakes, Murs, Atmosphere, RJD2, Aceyalone, Rhymefest, Jurassic 5, Pharoahe Monch, K-OS... of course you have a few that have gotten some attention like Talib, Mos, De La, The Roots, Kanye (mixed feelings on this one), Lupe, Pharrell, HOVA and a few others that slipped my mind - Good Music that just happens to bang the hip-hop genre, straight up!
AMAZING amazing amazing
AMAZING job Q-Tip. Such a slept on artist. a perfect album for a chill day, a relaxed moment or an early morning preparing for work. I'm so impressed and so obsessed! Thank god for good music in 2008!
five stars, no doubt
every week there is a new album that people write reviews proclaiming "this is real hip-hop" insinuating that because its not about money and hoes, it makes good music. not all hip-hop is great music and deserves five stars. but in the case of q-tip, this IS real hip-hop, and this is unbelievable music. the beats are good, the lyrics are incredible, and the mood and feeling that this album gives the listener is one of love. Any music fan can appreciate Tribe, and i think this is on par with any of their albums.
