Fantastic!
This album is, in a word, phenomenal. I remember following its progress when it was being produced - tweets about recording with a choir (!), playing an organ, lots of sha-la-las, as well as the tracks being posted to the band's myspace - and thinking it could turn out to be something very special. And I was still unprepared for just how instant and enormous an impact it would make on me.
It's at once a natural progression for the band and recognisably a "Remus Lupins" album while still branching out in an exciting, confident manner to produce something that I, at least, am quick to call a masterpiece. Alex Carpenter has always had a gift for metaphor and turns of phrase, and here he's crafted some of the best songs he's ever penned - notably, "Love Lily" and "The Rest is Silence", which perhaps not coincidentally bookend the album beautifully. "Artwork at Malfoy Manor" is another track with lyrics that find an intelligent way to examine the canon works to which this all pays tribute, while "Just Love (War is Over)" espouses the love and good will that permeates all of their music, even as it makes stark the tragedy that befell so many of our beloved characters.
Words only go so far, however, and the band is more lively than ever. They've always experimented with sound and style, and in this album that's been refined to something quite impressive indeed. Every track is simply aurally interesting - whether it be the small touches such as the aforementioned backing choir and organ, to the grainy gramophone-like intro to "Loose Lips", or more overt things such the driving guitars of "Marauders' Worst Memory" and "Don't Duel" or the general melodic wonder to be found in every track. Again, the word that most frequently comes to mind is 'confident'. It's clear that when putting together this album, the band had a clear vision. And the result is simply transcendant.
This cd is totally awesome!
Alex Carpenter is definitely one of the best wiz rockers out there. On this release, he adds a whole new layer of sound by having a girls choir on many of the tracks. Stand out tracks are Lovely Lily, Marauder's Worst Memory, Perfect For Each Other, The Wedding, Graduation Day, and The Rest is Silence. Buy it now if you love Harry Potter and rock music!
