iTunes Review
The genteel sounds of Ra Ra Riot’s indie pop are nothing new: bands like The Shins, Arcade Fire, The Coctails, and Vampire Weekend have all made sweetly emotive music, suitable for your own brand of dancing/twitching/twirling, depending on your state of mind. Using the now popular sounds of strings to baroque things up a bit, this New York band turned out a beautiful pop debut to rival those of the bands above — all in the aftermath of losing founding member/drummer John Pike in a drowning accident in 2007. Naming the album after a bar near Pike’s house in Massachusetts, and infusing the songs (many co-written by Pike) with an almost joyous vibe, The Rhumb Line feels both like a celebration of things past and an affirmation of what’s to come. The songs here brim with self-assured grandness: the gently soaring “Ghost Under Rocks,” the eerie and melancholy “Dying Is Fine,” the butterfly flutters of “Each Year,” and the faintly Beatlesque “Winter ‘05” are sculpted into small masterpieces by vocalist Wes Miles, his soothing and sweet inflections knitting the strings and guitars into gently propulsive pop songs that move feet and heart alike. The band’s cover of Kate Bush’s “Suspended in Gaffa” is fresh and quite superb.

if Jesus and I hung out and he asked me wo he should listen to, i'd be like Ra Ra Riot
From Promising EP to Perfect LP
After the release of Dying is Fine the EP released a while ago i have been waiting for the full length and they completely delivered. This album is GREAT. If your not a huge fan (yet) or your not into buying entire albums i would say the best two tracks are St. Peters's Day Festival and Each Year. Amazing stuff. If you like em then check out the other new college bands, MGMT, Chester French and of course the kings of it all Vampire Weekend. But i must say, this is way up there with all of em.
Another accomplished indie-rock debut for 2008
It looks as though the indie-pop throne, currently occupied by Vampire Weekend, might be contested with this debut album from Ra Ra Riot. Sharing a love for bouncy melodies, literary lyrics, and singers with a similar vocal style, these two bands will definitely be competing for attention from indie enthusiasts. However, while Vampire Weekend embrace a very relaxed and sunny style filled with afro-pop guitars and vapid lyrics, Ra Ra Riot take themselves a little more seriously. With an overactive cellist and violinist among their members, the group create a sound that is both very bright and tense at the same time. Also, with the recent death of a beloved band member, Ra Ra Riot can't seem to shake the gloomy overtones from lyrics about death and ghosts. Luckily, the band doesn't dwell on the sadness; throwing in a few love songs, plenty of pleasant melodies, and an overall positive outlook that let the album be fun and enjoyable. The problem with "The Rhumb Line" is that it tends to be a little unmemorable. Beside the danceable "Dying Is Fine," the songs come and go without really sticking, at least immediately. The melodies and hooks are all there, but for some reason after a listen or two I couldn't remember any moments that struck me. The album is always pleasant, but rarely exciting. After a few more spins, the songs have become more compelling, but the music still doesn't "grab" me. Having said that, this is a strong debut by a group who understand their limits as well as their strengths and choose to play to the latter. It's short (37 minutes) and consistent throughout, giving a glimpse of a band that should only get better with time. For indie lovers like me, it's a must-have for 2008.
