Moving from behind the scenes to the spotlight
His website states, you probably dont know his name, but you've definatley heard his music. Hodges is the classic example of a man who has paid his dues in the music industry. Songwriting credits for major pop and rock artists like Dashboard Confessionals, Kelly Clarkson, David Archuletta, David Cook, Tyrone Wells, Evanescence, Celine Dion, The Backstreet Boys, Blake Lewis, Nick Lachey, and Daughtry just to name a few. It would seem only natural that he would strike out on his own and release his own material. Hodges did just that fronting the band "Trading Yesterday" which was signed to Epic records and the uncerimoniously dropped from the label before their album even released to eagerly awaiting fans. Hodges moved on to front another band "The Age of Information" which released their material independently (and can be found on itunes). Now Hodges continues to artfully weave meaningful lyrics and music in an effortless seamless way that leaves the listener yearning for more in his solo project "The Rising". Hodges greatest weapon in his musical style is his employment of backing vocals that create a whole new depth to the melodies presented in each of his songs. As a listener I really can't explain how much this album strikes home musically for me. One needs to experience and take in every note, every lyric for themselves. This is a wonderfully crafted piece that I hope brings Hodges out from the shadow of every artist he has written for and into spotlight to showcase his unbelievable musical talent. Unfortunaley four songs is all the listener receives on this EP, but each song provided is an amazing musical journey and i find myself playing it over again as soon as the final track ends.
"Tomorrow is too late, so don't waste a day of this life" - buy this EP!
When it comes to songwriters and performers, David Hodges takes a huge stand over anyone and everyone. All songs from his past projects (Trading Yesterday and The Age Of Information) have always had that certain brilliant feel to them, and it's apparent that David has not lost anything along the way - quite the opposite, actually. This EP opens with the dark instrumental "The Rising" which immediately gets you hooked. It starts with a slow, melodic piano intro when a catchy drum beat comes in before the chorus, which is full of power with distorted guitars while the piano part lingers underneath. David's powerful voice comes in with no hesitation on the second track "When It All Goes Away." The song continues to build up from the beginning, until the slow, acoustic guitar-filled bridge comes in while David takes some time to sing softly, before the beautiful chorus breaks out again; asking "where do we go when it all goes away?" "Hard To Believe" is by far the best choice for the single. It is very reminiscent of some bands today such as Lifehouse or Daughtry, but very original at the same time. I could see this song being played on radio stations across the world; it's very catchy, but meaningful at the same time - which is hard to find in some songs these days. David's voice is accompanied by acoustic guitar and simple piano chords in the first part of the verse. Drums are soon to come in, with some wonderful lyrical work from David: "Wait, maybe the reasons don't fit / When did you lose innocence / When did you find that you can't hold on / When the whole world brings you down." I have no words to even begin to describe the chorus in this song - simply amazing. "Another Red Light" talks about seeing light in dark times.. about how, sometimes, you need to "smile when you're not supposed to laugh / and cry when you're supposed to hold it back." This song is full of emotion - both sadness and happiness together. This is the perfect closing song, but I still cannot wait for a full LP from Mr. Hodges and friends. David always conveys such wisdom and meaning through his lyrics over catchy and melodic music, so if you're someone who enjoys lyrical meaning and/or musical catchiness, Hodges is the man for you.
David Hodges never lets me down.
As a fan and friend of David Hodges, I am convinced that he is incapable of writing a song that I don't love. This EP ties together the last 5 years of Hodges musical ventures and I believe that much good is to come from him in the near future. Thanks for the music and the inspiration.
