iTunes Review

The Fruit Bats have been through several lineup changes since their first release in 2001, with the one constant being Eric Johnson — who has rambled a bit himself, playing in the bands Califone, Vetiver, and most recently the Shins. This time around the Fruit Bats are a quintet with Johnson writing the songs and the band bringing forth an acoustic/electric blend of mellow-to-midtempo soulful Americana. They offer introspective and wistful ballads (“Beautiful Morning Light,” “Singing Joy to the World,” “Flamingo”), pedal-steel-driven country rock (“Primitive Man,” “The Ruminant Band,” “Being On Our Own”), and catchy parlor-piano romps (“The Hobo Girl,” “My Unusual Friend”). Solidly entrenched in a tradition that stretches from Neil Young and the Band to the Fruit Bats’ many alt-country contemporaries, what is striking is how the Bats pull off such melodic and memorable songs with such apparent ease. Each lick and lyrical phrase drops just where it should without filler or fuss. Simultaneously familiar and fresh, The Ruminant Band is a strong addition to an already solid discography.

Dont know much about the Fruit Bats

but this is a damn good cd, favorite song The Blessed Breeze.. I love the guitar work on this, though not enough, I understand that doesnt sell these days... This is just good music straight up no shortcuts or roundabouts.

Well worth the wait...

Wow! 4 years is a long time to wait for a new album, but thankfully, this doesn't disappoint. In fact, the more I listen to it, the more I appreciate how well done, beautiful, catchy, melodic, and poetic it is. For anyone who's enjoyed the Fruit Bats previous efforts, rest assured, it's still unmistakably Fruit Bats. Everything you loved about their "sound" is still intact, but with the change and addition of band members, this seems like more of a collaborative effort and as a result is a bit more varied. It's kind of weird - every song feels instantly familiar, but distinctly unique at the same time. If you're not familiar with this band, please give it a listen. Check out the "Ruminant Band" single, "The Blessed Breeze" or "Feather Bed". Perfect breezy summer album!!

deserves alot more.

The Ruminant Band is worth all of your money if you're curious into sounds like: Folk, Classic Rock, Indie Rock. The Ruminant Band has a sureal feeling that sticks to it. The lyrics are witty&clever. I just saw The Fruit Bats last night, and I'm going to have to tell you. They deserve alot more credit. They're music is for the chill-mellow music go-ers. If all you listen to is Itunes top 100, you probably won't get into this. But go ahead and give it a chance. It's catchy, upbeat, and feel good music - especially "Being on Our Own" BUY IT! SUPPORT THE FRUIT BATS!

Biography

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Originally hailing from Chicago, the Fruit Bats feature an ever-changing lineup based around the folk-pop songwriting of bandleader Eric Johnson (not to be confused with the Eric Johnson from Archers of Loaf or the guitar virtuoso of the same name). Johnson began writing songs on his four-track in the mid-'90s before forming I Rowboat, a Velvet Underground-inspired indie rock band. He also began dabbling in folk music with two of the band's members, guitarist Dan Strack and drummer Brian Belval,...
