iTunes Review

Howlin’ Rain frontman Ethan Miller returns with a mostly new band (keyboardist Joel Robinow remains in the lineup) and a full-blown classic rock sound on the group's third release. It unapologetically pulls from blues-based, heavy rock '70s bands like Black Sabbath, Grand Funk Railroad, and Queen, along with touches of prog and psych-rock. The eight-minute opener, “Self Made Man,” sets the stage for the album with a driving rhythm section, extended guitar soloing, and Miller’s soaring, melodramatic vocals ringing with power and clarity. It’s followed by the equally epic “Phantom in the Valley,” which morphs into Santana-inspired, horn-fueled Latin rock for its second half. Elsewhere the band delivers lush blue-eyed soul on “Can’t Satisfy Me Now” and “Beneath Wild Wings,” a loose and expansive jam on “Cherokee Werewolf,” and the power ballad “Strange Thunder,” which starts with an acoustic guitar and dreamy falsetto before reaching its lung-bursting, bombastic conclusion nine minutes later. The Russian Wilds may be a classic rock throwback, but it’s a fully committed one. Turn it up.

Vintage Bliss

Everything about this album spells 3 AM living room rock session. This thing howls and it whispers, like Nicholas Cage - smoothly transitioning between backwoods campfire harmony and vintage blues. The immediate clarity of lead singer Ethan Miller in the studio will draw you in. These guys have the gumption to be the next big band.

Incredible

This album is the best thing to happen to rock and roll in a long time. It's soulful, well produced, fittingly strange at points and goes places you don't expect. Vocal abilities of Miller (at times sounding like Donald Fagen while other times like a soulful screaming Chris Cornell all while maintaining a distinct originality) matched with infectious grooves give this album it's trademark sound. The guitar work/solos are not shred based nonsense, instead the players make every note meaningful. The album is mixed to perfection. Everything is placed strategically in the mix and just sounds phenomenal. I don't know how much of a hand Rick Rubin had in this, but his ear and production experience matched with the bands talent and writing just blew me away. I can't recommend an album more for you to buy than this one. Thank me later.

Amazing

This album blew my mind. Phenomenal. Wow. Just wow

Biography

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Unapologetically influenced by the strong but easygoing grooves of West Coast '70s rock, Howlin Rain represented something of a change of pace for guitarist and singer Ethan Miller, who previously fronted the psychedelic noise rock ensemble Comets on Fire. After the recording of Comets on Fire's final album, Avatar, in 2006, Miller was eager to explore the more melodic direction the group began pursuing, and with bassist Ian Gradek (who had known Miller since high school) and drummer John Moloney...
