iTunes Review

With The Second Gleam it seems like the Avett Brothers subscribe to the Woody Guthrie songwriting philosophy that, "If you play more than two chords, you're showing off." While they don't adhere to that discipline religiously, Seth and Scott Avett pen stripped-down, threadbare, country folk songs with guitar, banjo, the occasional piano, and lucid lyrics that open up pathways into complex feelings and introspection. The anticipated follow-up to 2006's The Gleam begins with "Tear Down The House," a slow waltzing number rooted in traditional Appalachian confessionals and early 1960s coffeehouse folk. "Murder In The City" has the Avetts harmonizing softly over endearing lyrics about the loving bond between their family members, and "The Greatest Sum" flows with a descending melody in the verse that's sublimely catchy enough to take up residence in your head for days. Like Gillian Welch, the Avett Brothers find serene beauty in modern-themed melancholic musings set to sparse, acoustic country. "St. Joseph's" exemplifies this best with timeless arpeggios that tiptoe around a narrative about trying to find warmth in the coldness of a late night hospital visit.

Customer Reviews

a gamut of emotions

This EP is fantastic. Mistakes, family, pretty girls, murders, love, memories, heartbreak, it's all included here in true Avett "Gleam" fashion. They're finally hitting their stride and getting the recognition they deserve. This is one group who did things the right way, from the ground up and it's all paying off now. I used to be able to see them in dingy bars across the Eastern U.S. with relatively no crowd, now, I can't even get close to the stage when they place. Congratulations men!

Avett Brothers can't be touched

These guys are, bar none, the best band out there. Their live shows embody the essence of musical passion and energy. Every chord strikes to emotion so pure you can feel your heart + soul vibrate with each string that is plucked. This is a long-awaited addition to a legacy of a great music collection these guys have been putting out there for years.

Best Ever!!!!

Murder In the City...is awesome!!!!!! This is the best live group!!!!

Biography

Formed: 2000 in Concord, NC

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

The Avett Brothers' music has roots in traditional folk and bluegrass, but also captures the high spirits and no-boundaries attitude of rock & roll — which is appropriate, since rock is where Scott Avett and Seth Avett first cut their teeth as musicians. Although siblings Scott (vocals, banjo) and Seth (vocals, guitar) began making music together as children, their group's genesis began when they were members of Nemo, a rock band that gigged regularly in Greenville, NC.
