The Second Half of the Bet (Hope Again)

I've been happily listening to the latest disc from Jason Luckett for several days now and have to say I honestly enjoy every track.
From the reggae-tinged opener "One Step" through Brazilian-influenced "Noonday Sun" and "Odds and Ends", they're all gems.
There's a breeziness to Jason's writing and performance here that remind me quite frequently of acoustic pop icon Stephen Bishop - and that's okay in my book.
I'd recommend "The Second Half of the Bet" to anyone craving a big slice of California sunshine translated into song.

The Second Half of the Bet Offers Hope Again

Guitarist (and multi-instrumentalist), singer and songwriter Jason Luckett's newest release "The Second Half of the Bet -- Hope Again" takes the listener on an eleven-song voyage spanning multiple genres and lyrical domains, from the reggae- and bluegrass-infused political anthem "One Step" to the evocative and spare solo guitar and vocal of "When My Lover Calls." Other standout tunes include the gentle jazz ballad "Odds and Ends" and its contemplation of life and mortality, the Pink Floyd-tinged "Magic Trumps Reason" and the pop witticism of "Sunshine & Rain" and its humorously reflective list of seven potential (failed) romantic interests.

Luckett wrote and produced the record and played nearly every instrument on the album, with the exception of the backing vocals of sublime jazz singer Nailah Porter on several tracks and the fine bass work of David Sutton on the opener. He imbues each song with its own originality while remaining faithful to the varied genres and styles he embraces on the record. His voice is mellow and sweet, and the joyfulness with which it's clear he approaches many of these tunes shines through.

Too many albums in the singer-songwriter bin fall prey to lyrical cliche, meandering melody and lack of harmonic interest. Luckett's music does the opposite. As fine a prose writer as he is a composer (he's a published essayist), his lyrics fall on the literary side of the spectrum, but maintain a directness and clarity that allow the meaning to be heard as a complement to the music.

Highly listenable and thought-provoking, with lump-in-the-throat-inducing turns of phrase, "The Second Half of the Bet (Hope Again)" carries its message musically and lyrically to those of us rounding the corner to the next section of our journey, and to those that haven't quite made it that far but realize its imminence.

Biography

Born: Hawaii

Genre: Singer/Songwriter

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Born in Hawaii but raised in Los Angeles, singer/songwriter Jason Luckett used his bizarre experiences in the area (and unstable family life) to craft a career based around a concept he calls Groovy Acoustic Soul. A passionate, soulful slab of folk rock, this musical hybrid began building a buzz in the area when Luckett released his debut record, J Masala Griot, in 1993. A little-heard release, its tiny distribution did little to deter him from continuing and 1996's Suicide, or Celebration? became...
