Amy X...Cellos...Euphoria (and laughs)!
Amy X Neuburg's song cycle, inspired by three years of riding New York's subways and learning their rhythm of life, is her finest work to date. "The Secret Language of Subways" was this listener's introduction to Ms. Neuburg's art, and he continues to find each song transporting him to a different stop in her imaginative, subterranean world. As this album is meant to be savored as a whole, it might be unfair to single out particular tracks. Nonetheless, "Someone Else's Sleep" is a flawless synthesis of classical and pop. The Cello ChiXtet sweep you off your feet (and into a pulsating R train) from the very first beat. Ms. Neuburg, who explores multiple vocal genres on all her recordings, even manages to bend her voice into a sinuous Indian rhythm at the song's mid-point.
Other superb tracks include "One Lie," "Difficult," "Body Parts" and "Hey." At no point, though, does Neuburg dominate her cello accompaniment. Rather, singer and cellists compliment each other and play off one another throughout the cycle, with dazzling precision and...wit! "The Secret Language of Subways" is a terrific recording, and a great adventure.
