An Incredible Album
Lauren O'Connell is clearly one of the most talented songwriters working today. A skillful guitarist with a unique voice, she incorporates clever wordplay into her music, resulting in lyrics that elicit an involuntary "wow!" from the listener. The Shakes demonstrates her incredible mastery of emotion: you can feel her futility in Tangled Up Kites, and the bitterness of I Don't Mind, a deceptively simple song which deserves to be played on repeat. Though some of her faster-paced songs don't seem to carry the same depth as her ballads, they are catchy and witty with excellent instrumental contributions from collaborating artists. Where O'Connell really shines, however, is in her use of other genres. The storytelling in The Pilot is reminiscent of classic American folk music, while a bluegrass influence helps make Chicken Wire the best song on this album, and arguably a masterpiece.
Unique and fun with a side of AWESOME!
Her lyrics are amazing, her voice is very unique and even if it was just her and her guitar it would of been worth it, the band just makes it even better!
