Album Review
Alternative metal exploded during the late '90s thanks to groundwork laid by groups like Nine Inch Nails, White Zombie, and Rage Against the Machine, and as record companies scrambled to find the next Korn or Limp Bizkit, the genre became clogged with legions of similar-sounding bands, all trying to find just the right blend of low, heavy guitar riffs, rap-metal, industrial, and intense aggression. Often, those attempts could result in sounds that seemed too calculated and self-consciously cobbled together to feel natural; plus, inventive production was frequently employed to disguise many songs' lack of memorable hooks. The Sickness, the first entry by Chicago's Disturbed in the alt-metal sweepstakes, thankfully avoids those common pitfalls, turning in a mixture of raw, gut-level metal and industrial/electronic backing that feels logical and integrated. Although the music has its fair share of pummeling aggression and accompanying shouted vocals, Disturbed also isn't afraid to employ melody, and they're actually quite good at it when they choose that direction. Occasional forays into rap-metal aren't really the group's strong suit and can feel a bit awkward, although they do have a certain rhythmic acuity missing from some similar bands' attempts. But even if it has a few less-than-compelling moments, The Sickness overall comes off as the work of a band who really doesn't have far to go to achieve total control of its sound and compositional skills, and that makes it a terrific debut album.

The best Album Ever
This is one of my favorite albums ever. Note that the best songs are all in the first five.
1. Voices.- Great Song. My favorite on the disc. My very first song listened to from Disturbed. Good Guitar riffs. Nice start. All Around awesome.
2. The Game- Another good song. Good Lyrics and drums in this one. I like the start to this one.
3. Stupify- Questionably the best song ever. Good rhythm and Guitar work. Great Lyrics.
4. Down With the Sickness- The first Song that comes into anybody's mind when I say Disturbed. The Unquestionable single that everyone loves. Very Strong Lyrics, very strong Riffs. Play count for me is 37. The Best.
5. Violence Fetish- Very good Start, continues Strong. Not as good as Voices or Stupify, but I still like it.
6. Fear- Another merely So-So song, but still good stuff.
7. Numb- People always say they LOVE this song. I guess it's OK, but it's not great.
8. Want- Another song I don't really care for. Not my favorite, but it still has the stuff that I like.
9. Conflict - Better, but still just Ok. They say Enemy too much, but I like the rhythm.
10. Shout- My computer calls it Shout 2000, but I don't care about that. Good lyrics, good song work.
11. Droppin' Plates- I like this song because it's funny. They say Plates On your ass bitch. I think that is funny. Really it's ok, but it's hilariously named and lyrics are funny too.
12. Meaning of life- Not a strong song. Period.
Great Debut
When Korn went on thier unexpected three year break, many other hard rock/metal bands rushed in to take their place. Disturbed's debut, the sickness, firmly established them as one of the top hard rock/metal bands of the 2000's. Along with system of a down and slipknot, disturbed brought hard rock to the place it is now. Here is a song by song review of the album.
Voices: 9/10. Great opening track. I like the way it builds tension at the beginning and then explodes into the first riff. The verses are little bit lacking, but the hook saves the song. I really like listening to this, it's a very good song.
The Game: 10/10. Second best. Wow. It's heavier than Voices, and I think it is about a man murdering a deceitful girlfriend. The guitar riffs are explosive. As with voices, the hook is great, but here the verses are also good. Sort of a slow-fast mix. I love it.
Stupify: 9/10. Disturbed made this song as an anthem, not as much of a song as the game and Voices. While The Game and Voices both have somber, gloomy moods, this song has an upbeat mood. The hook is a bit lacking. Overall, a good track though.
Down With the Sickness: 10/10. WOOOOOOOW! Play count: 71. Never gets old. Every time I hear the chorus, I cream in my pants! Ha ha not really, but this song is incredible. Sort of dissolves into shouting near the end, but that's okay. One of the top five rock songs of the 2000's, no question, and the album's best.
Violence Fetish: 7/10. The album sort of starts to dissolve here. The first four might be the best opening to an album I've ever heard. The verses are good here, just not a really standout song. Nothing to separate it from everything else. The hook is not good either. I guess it is okay, not something I would listen to unless I was listening to the whole album through.
Fear: 8.5/10. I say 8.5 because there is no way it is as good as voices and stupify, but it is a quality song. The hook is the same quality as voices, but the verses just fall off. The guitar on this is also good.
Numb: 7/10. Slower song. It is sort of boring, nothing really to make it stand out. I like faster paced songs, unless they're really good like Aerials or A World So Cold, and this song doesn't come anywhere close to them.
Want: 6.5/10. This song is pretty obviously a filler song. Just follows the filler formula, but the formula is applied pretty well. Its a much better filler than other bands fillers, you wont hear any filler like this on a Queens of the Stone Age or Mudvayne album. I don't skip it if I'm listening to this album, but don't listen to it by itself.
Conflict: 7.5/10 I think they say enemy four times more than anything else. But the guitar is good, it holds the tension throughout the song. Their isn't really any high point in this song, it flows along evenly. Okay song.
Shout: 4/10. WTF? A kindergartener could write better lyrics. "Shout Shout! Let it all out, these are the things I can do without. So come on, I'm talking to you". It sound a little like a childrens song. The instrumental parts are also poor.
Droppin Plates: 8/10. This has the same lyrics as a rap song almost. Just a song that smokes your enemies. It has funny vocals, and the instrumental parts are also good.
Meaning of Life: 8.5/10. Good closing song. No holes in this, you will like it if you like rock. Some weird whispering parts, but other than that solid.
Great First Album!!
This is a really good album and instead of wasting time with compliments here is a song by song review.
1.Voices- A great opener. Nice and heavy with a soft opening like an opening should be. 5/5
2.The Game- Good song. David does a great job with the vocals. 4/5
3.Stupify- Everyone seems to like this song. It is good but not great. There are a lot of better songs.
4.Down With the Sickness- YES!!! Disturbed’s Best!! Everything about this song Rocks! And You never get tired of it. My play count for it is 30 and it still rocks! 10/5!
5. Violence Fetish- Not bad, But kind of boring. I usually skip over this song. 3/5
6. Fear- Awesome song! Very catchy, also pretty heavy, one of my favorite Disturbed Songs. 5/5
7.Numb- Boring song, My least favorite on the album. There is just no strength in this one. 2/5
8. Want- Great song with a slow, quiet opening and blows your ears out about 30 seconds in. 5/5
9.Conflict - I don’t know why they didn’t call this one enemy. They use the word about 30 freakin times. A pretty good heavy song though. 4.5/5
10. Shout- I love it when disturbed makes remakes. They always crush the original. This is a good song. 5/5
11. Droppin Plates- Very strange. Actually kind of funny. Also pretty catchy. You need to hear this song more than once to appreciate it. 4/5
Meaning of Life- Bad ending for a great album. There is no real strength in this song. It is actually kind of annoying. 2.5/5
