iTunes Review

The Singles concisely documents the efforts of partners Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory to fuse glam-rock attitude with ambient textures and electronica beats. This compilation offers most of the unit’s signature tunes, including the vampy workout “Ooh La La,” the coolly seductive “Black Cherry,” and the enraptured “Utopia” (heard here in “Genetically Enriched” form). Collectively, the tracks capture Alison’s abilities as a shape-shifting vocalist, proficient at intimate balladry (“A&E”), space-queen incantations (“Ride a White Horse”), and purring love odes (“Believer”). The production moves are just as diverse and daring, ranging from the widescreen disco of “Strict Machine” to the woozy bounce of “Happiness.” Extending the perimeters further are a pair of new songs—“Yellow Halo” and “Melancholy Sky”—that veer toward the mystical in their balmy pulsations and wistful themes. Goldfrapp continues to show a remarkable ability to please the pop crowd while lacing its work with subversion and transcendence.

Fantastic Hits Collection!

Although they didn't include all their singles (& they could have, with the album clocking in at under 1 hour), they included most of the best ones, along with remixes and single versions of some of the songs. Also glad to see their return to form with Yellow Glow & Melancholy Sky - Head First was a little to relentlessly upbeat for me; there's also complete lyrics with the CD, if you like that sort of thing like I do...
Cheers, Greg

Good, but could've been better.

Out of all the bands out there today, Goldfrapp is one of the most unique, and has a respectable reputation. They tend not to retrospect, and this album was likely at the wishes of the record company, and not Goldfrapp themselves. That being said, "The Singles" could've been MUCH better. Minus the new songs, Lovely Head, and Number 1, ALL of their singles were remixed and/or edited for radio and single release. It is hard enough to find these versions of the songs, let alone in ONE place. The Singles missed an opportunity to fix that.

Great compliation

I love Goldfrapp and have every one of their albums. I bought this one because I like the collection of tracks and of course
for the 2 new tracks. I can't wait for another album. Always love how Goldfrapp changes. They make their own genre.
