iTunes Review

Michael Franti creates music that’s meant to inspire his listeners. Whether it’s to political action, to personal reflection, or to take it easy and enjoy the sunshine, Franti has a way of telling people things. His music has always enjoyed a fluid relationship with varied genres and the reggae-pop of 2010’s The Sound of Sunshine has a sound that’s pure summer. The title track, “Shake It,” featuring Lady Shaw, and “Hey Hey Hey” are as free-spirited an opening trio as could be imagined. The love songs wrap their longings in whistles and joyous outbursts that hide the frustration. But “Anytime You Need Me” and “Only Thing Missing Was You” are clearly upset at their core. After all, there’s a party going on elsewhere on this tropical island. “The Thing That Helps Me Get Through” is a full band assault and much harder than the breezy gaits preceding it. “Gloria,” with Cherine Anderson, is another tune that could’ve been played with Hawaiian mainstay Jack Johnson. “Headphones” and “The Sound of Sunshine Going Down” close out the album around the campfire. Another day in paradise complete.

Just Perfect!

OMGosh - what a fabulous collection of music. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Michael for doing this cd. It is perfect. Perfect for you, your voice, your belief and perfect for us - the listener. It is my favorite so far. WOW.

Also very disappointed

Michael Franti has been (and is) one of my favorite artists to see live. His lyrics have always been intelligent and interesting and a sign of the times. This simply does not compare favorably to his earlier works, and there is no connection to be made. Maybe airplay of some of these tunes will bring a wider audience to the messages of his earlier catalog as they explore deeper - the problem is, he may lose a number of his previous core fans with the lightweight material here.

If happiness had a soundtrack...

... this would be it. Despite the criticism, which suggests Franti's previous works were better because of his socio-political commentary, this album is superb. Every song overflows with joy. Michael and the gang have taken their music to a much more accessible realm. Sure, Franti stands for social justice - as we all should - but with so many albums preceeding this one about such things, it's nice to see an album that actually celebrates the good already existing in the world, instead of criticizing the bad. Franti and Spearhead have more than promoted change and happiness with their music and actions, so this album is in a sense the product of that social activism. He hasn't sold out. He has let the fame go to his head. As long as there is trouble in the world, Franti and Spearhead will be there to combat it with the power of love and music. And we chould be there to listen. You need this album.
