iTunes Review

Though the Black Heart Procession have specialized strictly in baroque expressions of doom-wracked romantic dejection for the past eight years, they have managed to pull an embarrassment of riches from that seemingly limited musical vein. The Spell, their fifth official full-length, is no exception. A loose concept album about the spiritual kinship between romantic delusion and police state paranoia, The Spell will provide familiar pleasures to those who already know the Black Heart Procession’s expert blend of highly allusive lyrical play and eerie sonic textures. While songs like “The Letter” and “The Waiter #5” boast the same elliptical cabaret keyboards and dark Kurt Wiell influenced melodies that characterized the Procession’s early work, the lo-fi murk in which those albums wallowed has long since dispersed, and an array of dazzlingly crisp, Morricone-like sonic vistas have been opened in their place. The Spell may be a reiteration of the Black Heart Procession’s familiar Gothic aesthetic, but the Procession’s new found penchant for studio experimentation ensures that it is a marvelously self-assured and rewarding one.

BHP does it again

this album is on point for the most part. probably my second favorite of theirs after "2". definetely a stp up from "amore del tropico". gets better with each listen.

The Black Heart Procession - The Spell

The Black Heart Procession sound like the kind of guys to swagger into a place, order a drink, and take a quick look around imagining what everyone in the room would look like dead. Chances are you'll find this one in the indie section of your local CD store, but with a cutting edge sound and distinctly gothic feel, the Spell is beyond single genre categorization. Slow and intense from start to finish, this is one of the most interesting albums I've heard in a while. Musically, I compare BHP to a combination of Bauhaus and Alkaline Trio where each band brings its best traits to the table in an effort to produce something that is sharp and cold yet enveloping and melodious. A crisp symphony of keys, various strings, precussion, and even a saw-yep a saw, seep and surround like a thick fog while singer Pall Jenkins doles out sad litanies of spells cast, webs spun and letters written but never read. And while it's all very dark and troubled it's not so much depressing as it is alarming; almost like a musical version of T.S. Eliot's The Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock.

Dark music with a somewhat uplifting feel to it.

Although rather bleak sounding at times this not your usual doom and gloom band. Really nice vocals that seem to have some emotion to them rather than tired goth posturing. Spare piano and guitar work help help to create the dark feel. Sometimes less is more.

Formed in late 1997 in San Diego, the Black Heart Procession have been described as beautifully bleak and brooding indie rock with a dark side.
