Album Review

The runaway train that is the string tribute hits the Rolling Stones this time, giving chamber group treatments to 11 hits from the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band. In a way, it's rewarding to see popular music from the second half of the 20th century collide with the pop repertoire tradition of its first half — the quintessential music of teen rebellion mellowing into a reconciliation with Montovani and Percy Faith. Most of the songs chosen work well as instrumentals, especially "As Tears Go By," which is unsurprising since it was originally a string-heavy song to begin with. "Emotional Rescue" is the only painful moment; as the lead violin scrapes through the melody it becomes apparent that this is one interpretation that shouldn't have gotten past the arrangers. Of course, as benign as it is, String Quartet Tribute to the Rolling Stones is sure to be divisive among the band's fan base. Some will write it off as crass commercialism pushing its nose in art, and others will see it as a refreshing take on a much-loved catalog of classic songs.

Surprisingly Good!

I'm a longtime Chili Pepper fan, owning ALL of their albums, including The Plasma Shaft, and I was a little annoyed when I first saw this. But then I listened to the previews of the songs, and I was shocked at how accurate and how... good it was. Don't rate this a 1 because it doesn't sound just like the Chili Peppers. It's not supposed to. Besides, what's the point of it if it sounds exactly like the songs themselves. What would be the point in buying this, when you could just buy the actual song? Anyway... I'm not even a fan of this kind of music (String Quartets, I mean), and I'm actually going to buy a few of these songs... as soon as I get a music card. And that's saying a lot, coming from me. Great job to whomever did this!

Woah!

This little album is amazing. I love the chili peppers and I thought this would sound awful. But after lisenting to the previews you can hear each one of the songs and it sounds great. I highly recommend it.

very cool

i can't help laughing when i listen to this. but that doesn't mean it's bad. i actually really like it. but after listening over and over to the actual songs, which are amazing, (RHCP are the best band in the world), listening to these incredibly accurate tributes just makes me laugh. the covers are very cool and fun to listen to. the only song i didnt like was the cover of suck my kiss. it just didnt sound that together to me. the best songs are under the bridge, soul to squeeze, californication, higher ground, and interstingly enough, can't stop. can't stop is one of my favorite songs by RHCP, and was probably the hardest for the string quartet to cover. Ive tried it on trumpet (the guitar part) and it was hard. i liked the interesting spin they put on it, and enjoy the whole album.
