Album Review

Following the hyper-aggressive Battle Hymns, The Suicide Machines is a surprisingly toned-down effort, often scrapping the band's previous third-wave ska style in favor of a catchy, mainstream punk-pop/alt-rock sound. While there are a few ska and hardcore-influenced tracks reminiscent of the band's earlier days, their manic energy has largely been replaced by more detailed arrangements; some of the harder-rocking tracks are reined in by chiming, clean-toned guitars in the background, for example, and a few cuts even use string sections. There are a couple of moments that sound a little generic, but overall, the record's move toward greater accessibility undeniably works, however disappointed some fans might be with the fact that most of the Suicide Machines' rough edges have been smoothed out.

Customer Reviews

So, it's a little slower and softer...

It's still an amazing album by an amazing band. It's not all fast punk ska like before, but it's stilla really cool album for a die-hard Suicide Machines fan.

Seeing things for what they are

Even though the Suicide Machines are a (ska) band, its not surprising that they would want to put out something other than ska. When I was in High School, I heard this album and thought it was crap because there were no fast up beats and crazy screams, but 6 years later I put it on and realized how talented this band actually is. Its better to listen to this CD with an open mind of how things change and styles fade, also how people grow.

it's pretty good

Ehh they've had better but it's pretty good i guess

Although many mistake alterna-ska punkers the Suicide Machines as being from California, where most of the genre's bands come from, they're in fact Detroit natives. The Suicide Machines did their first national dates the following year and by late 1994 Royce...
