Superb debut album
Waz started in the music industry as a guitarist in Pete Yorn’s band. He was impressed by the impact music can have and began writing his own songs while on tour with Yorn. Several years ago, he released Mine to Remember - EP. I do not remember how I came upon that EP, but I thought it was fabulous. Since then, I’ve been eagerly awaiting his full length debut album. He released an additional EP, but this was only available from the iTS in the UK. Recently, he covered U2’s ‘I Will Follow’. His music is largely only vocals, acoustic guitar, and piano/organ. This means that there is plenty of breathing room to keep the listener from becoming overwhelmed by any particular section. Put on your headphones and sit back. You can hear the piano. You can hear the guitar. You can hear the bass. You can hear the percussion. You can understand the words he sings. You can see both the forest and the trees. Things are balanced to keep you from getting lost. Waz doesn’t depend on fancy producing to sell his music. The elements are unprocessed and are allowed to speak for themselves. He works this to its fullest. This method gives him room to expand and grow, should he choose to do so in the future. It’s hard to put my finger on how, but his music has progressed even from what he put on the first EP. Fortunately, for comparison’s sake, both the EP and this album have the track ‘Mine to Remember’. The album version isn’t just a copy of what was on the EP, but has been revisited and revised. I’m sure that playing that song these last few years has given him more ideas of where to take it. It seems he has greater confidence in his works, both in the vocalizations and instrumentations. Waz knows that he can take a few more risks. By comparison, the EP version seems cautious. He did not cause earthquakes with the new version, but he has definitely shaken things up and created something even better. ‘Hardly Enough’ is one of my favorites from the album. I like that it starts out simply and builds. It gets more and more interesting, especially as he gets to the chorus and its “a-ha, a-ha, a-ha” vocals. He declares that “we will never be the same, things will never be the same.” It’s true. This is the first track of the album. Anything we might have thought about his music is about to change. Of course, his style is consistent with his previous work, but whatever was “hardly enough to get it right” was clearly just enough to bring about this wonderful album. Hopefully this album will bring Waz the recognition he deserves.
The Sweet Bye and Bye is a beautiful record!
WAZ has put together quite of collection of heartfelt songs. "Holding On" is my favorite...."and we fight for the love we deserve." I bought the entire album and received a free video of She's Gone (shot in Dublin...a must see) and artwork. There are two collages included in the artwork that are old school....they give you quite a behind the scenes look at the making of this record. What a lovely package! Highly recommend this one!
Buy This Album!
This is a killer debut album. I caught WAZ when he played The Cutting Room last year and was blown away. This album is truly an essential addition to your collection of great American songwriters and Waz's voice, along with Jamie Jackson's keyboards and vocal contributions are so great.
