Album Review

Listening to Swimming Hour is like taking a walking tour through 20th century musical history. Andrew Bird, a major contributor to nouveau-swing band the Squirrel Nut Zippers, mixes numerous styles and genres such as classical, Latin, and gypsy music, among others. The song "Why" feels like a jazz song from a 1950s film noir soundtrack, and "Satisfied" blends gospel with straight-ahead rock & roll. Also impressive is Bird's cover versions of the Mississippi Sheiks' "Too Long" and Nelstone's Hawaiians' "Fatal Flower Garden," a reworked rendition of an old Irish ballad. The vast array of musical styles are united by Bird's haunting vocals as well as lyrics that are both thoughtful and whimsical. While Swimming Hour is clearly an album obsessed with musical history, Bird manages to mix in enough of his own unique style to prevent the album from feeling like a musty old museum piece.

Brilliant!!

Oh Andrew Bird is amazing alright! I thought I loved him when I heard mysterious production of eggs but then I discovered his other stuff. Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire is rather different from his solo albums but equally unique, beautiful, and fun to listen to. I got this CD a few days ago and haven't been able to stop listening to it since. Case in Point is one of my new favorite songs of all time and I also quite enjoy Two Way Action, Why, Fatal Flower Garden... oh never mind I love all of them. Do give this a listen, it's different (not my usual sort of music) but it pulls you in and entrances you with all of it's splendiferous melodies.

a new experience

andrew bird's solo stuff isn't really too much like this, but that's not to say i don't like it, infact the opposite. most of the songs on this album are extremely listenable and catchy, and just because a song is simple doesn't condem it to mediocraty. i'm glad that in this album he branched out more, straying away from the swing music shown on the other two albums. songs like how indescrete and two way action are unlike most andrew bird songs, and i love them.

el genio.

Seriously, the fact that this album has 3.5 stars collectively just makes me want to hit the clown who rated it a mere ONE STAR! over the head. Disliking a genre does not mean that albums in that particular genre are not well done... and besides, this album is so diverse you couldn't really even stick it into any set genre. It an incredible, eclectic mix of purely artistic enjoyment! Please, if you are any fan of Andrew Bird, not to mention his Bowl of Fire, give it a go. I would consider this cd a merging of his newer work with that of the older BOF offerings... perhaps a transition of sorts. Brilliant! I'm tell you, brilliant!
