Intelligent Design
It is refreshing to discover industrial electronic music that refuses to conform to Hot Topic goth boot stomp stereotypes. There is nothing ghoulish or cartoonish here. Kobold offer an intelligent listening experience that celebrates composition and musical experimentation.
The debut album from Kobold is sharp, brooding, and lucid. The overall feeling of the album conveys a sense of catharsis... a healing of internal trauma that is not exactly pretty but rather, studied and honest. A varying two member group, Kobold has managed to produce a cohesive set of tracks that can truly be called an album. This is a rare feat in this time when single $0.99 tracks are praised for fast profit disregarding the story an album is supposed to tell.
The title track is reminiscent of 80's horror film scores.... namely the rejected COIL themes to Clive Barker's Hellraiser. "Blowback" and "Puzzlebox" stand out as the faster and more traditionally constructed tracks. Influences such as Trent Reznor and OhGr are evident here.
The BiaXial Creep remixes included on this album are slick and inform the progression of the Kobold sound evidenced in the subsequent BlowBack EP.
