Love the Song, But Wish I Hadn't Bought It
If you have a physical copy of Sky Blue Sky like I do, put it in your computer, open the little flash gizmo and save yourself the buck. Wilco has put bonus content on their last 3 discs and this song is one of the bonus downloads that comes for free with the CD version of SBS.
Fantastic song, OK recording
I was lucky enough to be in the audience when Wilco performed this for Late Night back in May 2006, and nearly instantly fell in love with this song. I later extracted the tune from a copy of the TV show and it's been in steady rotation on my iPod ever since. This version of the song is basically live, with no noticeable overdubbing - very raw, but compressed as though it were an FM radio performance. There are some added lead guitar licks that differentiate it from the Late Night version, and generally less prominent piano and organ, which I found a bit disappointing. My bottom line here is that if you have a copy of the Late Night performance, no need to get this one other than to pay the band back, which is worth doing.
Late Night with Conan still definitive
I was disappointed when this little gem was excluded from Sky Blue Sky. The performance on Conan was an instant classic, and this "studio" recording is largely inferior. The ripped mp3 I have of the live Conan performance seems to be of superior recording quality, firstly. Like another reviewer mentioned, there are far less piano and organ in this version, which was wonderful on Conan, with the deep rolling piano licks and organ blasts. Nowhere to be found on this. Nels guitar solo on Conan was chill inducing, and on here it's a bit of a snore. Jeff's vocal on this version is not as good, either. Damn, I really like this song, but it does sound like it was ripped from FM radio here. They should have just released the Conan version.
