These tracks are performed by Mat Weddle (aka Obadiah Parker) based off requests on his web site. The results are nothing short of fantastic! While most of the songs feature just Weddle solo on acoustic guitar, they come out very different. There's a strong rhythmic part to "Let's Stay Together" which does the Al Green original proud, but songs like "Thirteen" are very fresh in their new adapted sounds. "Trouble" keeps Coldplay's strong melody but it gets a very tender vocal that caresses that melody and makes it perfect for a softer overall feel. And of course "Hey Ya" is 100% great, the song that introduced so many people to Obadiah Parker. Go deeper with these songs and go to his site to check out OP's progress on an LP!
A nice mix of soul, gospel and folk...
This is a great little addition to Obadiah Parker's discography. It's a collection of acoustic cover songs, which are arranged quite differently from the original versions. They are generally slower, more relaxing takes of the songs. "Hey Ya" is even different than the previous versions that Obadiah Parker has released, such as on "Obadiah Parker Live" (which I have previously reviewed). I honestly wish Mat could get out from under the shadow of "Hey Ya" so people would recognize more of his original music, but at least he switched it up this time with this version. My favorite selection is the cover of Coldplay's "Trouble." Obadiah Parker has really been pushing himself and his creativity ever since going 'solo.' His success with the trio really helped cement himself in the indie culture with his awesome original cover of Hey Ya. Since then, Parker has set out on a journey of self exploration in the sometimes frightening world of solo artistry. His unique folk/jazz/acoustic funk sound is really unchallenged in today's soundscape. This album brings us a few more covers. As usual, these aren't just re-spun recordings--these are new songs. You will recognize their lyrics and their general rhythms, but the mood, angle of attack and attention to detail are amazing. "Trouble" will leave you in a state of awe. Do yourself a favor and set it on repeat for a while. Each listening of this track will bring out more of the subtle and delicious flows that OP manages. A new, solo version of Hey Ya is also included. While I prefer the original recording, this version is much more raw and daring. You put a lot on the line when it is just you, the mic and your instrument. I congratulate OP on another stellar release, and look forward to future volumes of The Tip Jar.
