iTunes Review

For over 30 years, Los Lobos have delivered an unbroken stretch of rock-solid recordings. Some of their albums, like 1990’s The Neighborhood or 2004’s The Ride are primarily straight roots rock, a genre they mastered in the mid-80s, while others, 1992’s Kiko for instance, incorporate artier, more experimental sonic elements. The Town and the City is closer to the latter category and it’s a brilliant and adventurous piece of work. The songs are mostly focused on the experiences of immigrants in America—legal and illegal alike—trying to deal with the gaps between expectations and reality. Los Lobos know how to tell a story convincingly, and their arrangements and the atmospheric textured production give the songs an added boost. There are also other joys beyond the song continuity and the usual high level of musicianship: the wide range of guitar tones they get, their drum sounds, the way they layer so many different instruments and phrases without smothering the songs, and David Hidalgo’s clear, soulful vocals. Considering their career trajectory and devotion to their craft, it should come as no surprise that The Town and the City is one of Los Lobos’ finer recordings. Turns out they’re just hitting their prime.

Just what I needed!

When Los Lobos released Kiko, I immediately got wired to the music. Here they go again with The Town and the City. Just a great combination of Latin fused rock'n roll complete with controlled yet raw feedback on the guitar, tremendous rhythm, and singular vocal work. What's not to like. Get with this band...they will get you through all the ups and downs in love and life. This group is one of the rare multi decade innovaters of fabulous music. You will not be dissappointed!

They never let me down...

Reminds me of By the Light of the Moon. So if you dig that then you dig this.

My Feel Good Album

I just love this album. It's soft, yet not slow, its just right for somebody who wants to chill out and relax. For me this is the best album I've heard from them. It's just so, wonderful and great that they can release another album as good as this. I love the opening track "Valley", I think it has just become one of my new favorite songs. "Hold On" is another great song from them, I love the feel to it. "Chuco's Cumbia" is another good song, but this time it's one of the songs they do in spanish, and I don't know any at all, but I love it. Look I can just go on and on, on how much I love this album...but the bottom line is this, if you love Los Lobos or just love good music then purchase this album, you will fall in love with it just as I have.

Los Lobos were one of America's most distinctive and original bands of the '80s. They may have had a hit with "La Bamba" in 1987, yet that cover barely scratches the surface of their talents. Los Lobos are eclectic in the best sense of the word. While they draw equally from rock, Tex-Mex, country, folk, R&B, blues, and traditional Spanish and Mexican music, their music never sounds forced or self-conscious. Instead, all of their influences become one graceful, gritty sound. From their very first...
