iTunes Review

By all rights, Kentucky-bred Chris Knight’s should’ve become a country music star in the late ‘90s. Unfortunately, the singer/songwriter’s self-titled debut album for Decca proved too edgy for the Nashville mainstream. This back-story adds poignancy to The Trailer Tapes – recorded in 1996, these guitar-and-vocal home recordings reveal how flat-out brilliant Knight was on the verge of his “big break.” Carrying the stinging kick of straight bourbon, these songs are ornery, unvarnished and achingly honest. Knight continues on the hardscrabble tradition of Steve Earle and John Prine, laying down his tales of suffering and survival with a mixture of rage and compassion. His lyrics draw tears and blood – tunes like “Move On,” ”Hard Edge,” ”Rita’s Only Fault” and “If I Were You” are populated by damaged characters haunting the edges of the Heartland. Knight’s twang-laden singing fills his songs with believable grit and a palpable sense of loss. Perhaps the most affecting tune is “My Only Prayer,” an autobiographical sketch of a country boy adrift in the city. Raw but bracing, The Trailer Tapes is a stunning slice of Americana for those who like their country on the real side.

More than I could have ever hoped for

Nothing but Knight and his guitar. I've been waiting for this album to come up on iTunes for the better part of a month. I've been listening to Mr. Knight for years. I'm a college educated carpenter. I chose my trade for two reasons; because I love the craft, and I love the people. Chris sings about those people. Nobody does it better. If you actually "work" for a living, you'll love Chris Knight.

Totally original!

A talented man with just an acoustic guitar! This is his original music recorded right after arriving in Nashville. Check it out. And, should you get the chance, see him in concert. He did 2+ hours in Milwaukee and he did not disappoint!

Unbelievable

I'm not one given to hyperbolic statements, however I honestly believe that this is the best "songwriting" album of the past decade and one of the most poignant and important albums that probably won't be heard. Chris has always had the gift to convey the raw emotion of his lyrics through his voice, but when the music is finally taken away, all that remains is the words, the voice and the chords (and what mighty fine guitar playing it is!). "Hard Edges" is one of the most vivid songs ever created and along with every other song on this album, creates a bond with the listener that cannot be broken. I can only dream that Chris goes back to this format sometimes in the future, cause we all know the well ain't dry.
