Album Review
Tri-Tone Fascination sounds a bit like a grab bag of leftover tracks, but does give an indication of the range of talents possessed by Shawn Lane. Lane recorded all the tracks himself, with other musicians appearing on only a handful of tunes. Some seem to be leftovers from the Powers of Ten sessions ("The Way It Has to Be," "Tri-7/5"), others seem like experiments ("Art Tatum,") and there are a couple collaborative efforts. One of the DDT recordings (Lane's band with Luther and Cody Dickinson, now of the North Mississippi Allstars) finally sees the light of day, and he turns in a scorching version of Jimi Hendrix's "Peace in Mississippi." "Kaiser Nancarrow" is a crazy Buckethead-esque fusion piece that tips its hat to two of Lane's favorite musicians: guitar genius Henry Kaiser, and player-piano madman Conlon Nancarrow. "Art Tatum" sounds a bit out of place with its programmed beats and general wackiness, but ultimately serves notice that Lane was far from being just a fusion guy. The end of "Song for Diane" showcases Lane's piano playing, and his reading of the Bach piece highlights his arranging abilities, but it's his guitar playing that really amazes. Tri-Tone Fascination shows Shawn Lane stretching out beyond the confines of his Powers of Ten-style fusion, but it's still a bit weak compositionally. His real abilities are more manifest when playing with Jonas Hellborg, where his prodigious technique and boundless musical imagination were really free to fly. But since he passed away in late 2003, any solo glimpses of the under appreciated Shawn Lane are welcome.

Brilliant Musicianship
Shawn Lane is an underappreciated but brilliant musician. His electric guitar work has very few equals. He is also a wonderful keyboardist. This piece of work seems much more experimental than the previous Power of Ten. If you are a fan of fusion this album is a must. "The Way It Has to Be" is the most memorable of all the songs, but "The Hurt the Joy" is also beautiful. This is probably the last release by Shawn as he died in 2003. Check it out!
Gone too soon, NEVER FORGOTTEN!
The more you listen to the brilliance of his playing/writing/passion the more you will miss the man. Taken way too soon. Genius that burned so VERY BRIGHT but so very short. Shawn is what Guitar Master was coined for...
Good Album
The Tri-Tone Fascination is a good album, don't get me wrong, but I can't help but feel this album isn't as easy to get into as "Powers of Ten; Live!," which has some of the best instrumental songs I've ever heard on there. The version of "Tri-7/5" is much better on this album than it's live predecessor in PoT:L!, but track for track this album falls a little short of accessible, memorable songs with great hooks and riffs. "Kaiser Nancarrow," "Peace In Mississippi," "The Way It Has to Be," "Tri-7/5," "World Keeps Spinning (Song for Diane)," are my favorites at the moment, but songs like "Art Tatum" will take a while to set in, as well as the other couple tunes such as "Maria," "One Note At a Time," and "Epilogue;." Shawn really made a lot of ballad-esque tunes in here. Don't let the 3-star review depress you; anyone who's soaked in PoT:L! should pick this up if they enjoyed that.
