Yet Another Brilliant Work

Over the Rhine simply can't put out a bad album. This is yet another stellar work - great songs from start to finish. This covers lots of genres (rock, folk, jazz, pop, alternative), and moods (up-beat, introspective, sensual). Two of my favorites are "Don't Wait for Tom," a deliciously demented homage to Tom Waits, and "If a Song Could be President," a sly political jab sweetened by OtR's subtle lyrical wit. Karin Bergquist's vocals are amazing as usual. This collection is a "Must Have."

First-rate, sexy and fun

'The Trumpet Child' is a bit of a depature for Over the Rhine, but no big surprise since they've been playing some of these tracks in live concerts over the last year. It's more jazzy and sexy than the past alt-country-folk recordings, but definitely true to Over the Rhine's tradition. It's a showcase for Karin Bergquist's fantastic voice, which recently has been drawing comparisons to Leslie Feist, which is sorta funny (since OTR has been around for more than a decade), but I really like Feist, so OK with me. 'Trumpet Child' has a sexy and fun mood, but the band's religious theme is still present. My favorites here are 'Trouble,' 'Trumpet Child,' 'Entertaining Thoughts,' and 'Let's Spend the Day in Bed.' This is interesting music, really interesting.

Over The Rhine Just Keep Getting Better

Well written songs, eclectic in their compostitions, yet tied together in spirit. I have about 8 OTR CDs and I honestly didn't think they could turn out anything better. Pleasantly surprised that a group this good can keep finding fresh creativity after so many years.

Biography

Formed: 1989 in Cincinnati, OH

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Over the Rhine had already developed a large and intensely loyal following in their native Cincinnati, OH, before they independently released their first two albums, Till We Have Faces (1991) and Patience (1992). Their music, which they aptly dubbed "post-nuclear, pseudo-alternative, folk-tinged art-pop," is difficult to pigeonhole. They have been compared to 10,000 Maniacs, the Innocence Mission, U2, and Shawn Colvin, but the band's personality seems to owe more to its literary influences (which...
