Awsome Contemporary Music

This album is the best and most comprehensive contemporary cello music album out there. The music ranges from Kodlay's humoungous cello sonata (scored for a different tunnning of the strings) to Brittens cello suites. Mr.Haimovitz shows tremendous technical ability as well as a wonderful ablitiy to make sense of the complicated contemporary music out there these days. The verocity at which he atacks these large works is inspiring and should draw anyone to want to listen to this CD. Being a cellist my self, studying some of these peices, i found it very clear and consise which helped me learn some of the music. Ge it or else!!!! Sincerely, Fellow Cellist

Beautiful overkill

This collection was probably never meant to be listened to all in one sitting. The cello is a beautiful instrument -- Bach's 6 suites for solo cello, also available on iTunes, should be in everyone's library -- but the seventy (70) tracks in this collection start to sound all the same after a while. At the umpteenth soulfully resonant opening phrase, you'll be forgiven if you frown and switch to something else. In my opinion, Benjamin Britten's three Suites are the high points of the collection. Matt Haimovitz is a wonderful musician with great technique and what sounds like real affection for Britten's music. His performances are up there with those of Mstislav Rostropovich himself, for whom Britten wrote these masterpieces, maybe not as warm and expressive as the Russian master's but technically amazing.

Encyclopedic collection of modern music for solo cello

An encyclopedic collection of modern music for cello played brilliantly. The Kodaly sonata alone is worth the price of the whole.
