Album Review

This album contains two tributes to two other stellar guitarists. One of those is "Jiboom," which pays homage to Stevie Ray Vaughan, while "Frank" remembers Frank Zappa. Vai saw his career begin as a teenage stunt guitarist for Frank Zappa. Later, Mike Keneally performed the same role in a band backing Zappa. For this album, Keneally toured in Vai's band, but plays keyboards on the album. It is an amazing exhibition of six-string talent.

great album

I like this album alot. There really aren't many people who can be better then satriani and hendrix. The studant is the master now. I like Passion and Warfare more then this but, it has some good songs like, Blood & Tears and Windows to the soul. Check out vai.com. He had the guitar on the cover costom made for him after the album was released. All and all, a good album

One of Vai's best!

This is my third favorite Vai album after Passion & Warfare and Fire Garden. (I guess after this I'd have to put the also outstanding Sex & Religion and Real Illusions.) Although this album is highly experimental, I think it is probably one of his most accessible albums to a newbie of his music. "The Blood & Tears" - Upbeat midtempo rocker featuring an sampled exotic Asian vocal melody. "The Ultra Zone" - heavy metallish with some middle eastern sounding grooves. "Oooo" - majestically haunting with a melody reminicent of "Salamanders in the Sun" "Frank" - Tribbute to Frank Zappa. "Jibboom" - Amazong power trio blues jam, one of the best songs on this album. "Voodoo Acid" - Vocal song in which Steve tells a psychedelic story with the help of crazy sampling software. "Windows of the Soul" - Outstanding guitar ballad in a weird time signature. "The Silent Within" - Vocal song with outstanding melody and sampled instruments. Not much guitar. "I'll Be Around" - Heartfelt vocal/guitar ballad - one of the best songs here. "Lucky Charms" - Guitars, horns, and munchkins. "Fever Dream" - A bunch of different guitar sounds in an ok song. "Here I Am" - great straightforward hard rock song with vocals. "Asian Sky" - Rock anthem/guitar extravaganza featuring a couple of guest artists.

Six-string wizard Steve Vai, along with his one-time teacher Joe Satriani, set the standard for rock guitar virtuosity in the '80s. Born on June 6, 1960, and raised in Carle Place, New York, Vai became interested in the guitar via such legendary artists as Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Alice Cooper as a teenager and, upon starting high school, took lessons with an older player from the school, Joe Satriani. Playing in several local bands, Vai quickly picked up on the instrument, and by the age...
