iTunes Review

This previously (and mysteriously) unreleased 1971 recording finally received an Internet launch in 2004. Former Temptation David Ruffin had already made a solo success of himself when he cut the material contained here; he went on to more hits, including the mighty 1975 single "Walk Away From Love," but for the most part, these songs stayed on the shelf. Fans of Ruffin's dramatically edgy delivery will want to hear this set. He holds his own with the Jackson 5's then-recent "I Want You Back," the moodier Brook Benton hit "Rainy Night in Georgia," and a bonus-track version of Stevie Wonder's political spiritual "Heaven Help Us All." He also makes the-new tunes such as "Each Day is a Lifetime" and "I've Got a Need for You" his own. The excellent bonus tracks make for a nearly full-length album in themselves.

Ruffin is the man

No one can howl like Ruffin. I can't believe I had not heard of this album. Anyone who is serious about Motown needs this album. Good stuff - Temptations forever!

One of Music's Best Kept Secrets

Motown shelved this fantastic album rather than release it, I suspect DR's notorious personality disorders played a part in that decision. It's a shame because it could have done wonders for Ruffin and helped with the continuation of Motown's great legacy. Every song on the album is good and with 23 songs, some of which are remakes, that's a lot to to say. I don't have any real favorites but I think that if you listen to Ruffin's remakes of I Want You Back and Rainy Night in Georgia, you will get a true sense of the scope of his talent and what the rest of the album has to offer. Definately worth the purchase for all music lovers. Temptation lovers and great musical bargain lovers don't miss out on a terrific treat.

The Voice

One of the greatest lead singers the Motown stable ever had, David Ruffin became one of the artistic cornerstones of the Temptations after his lead vocal on "My Girl" (1965) paved the way for such majestic follow-ups as "Since I Lost My Baby" (1965), "Beauty Is Only Skin Deep" (1966), "All I Need" (1967), and "I Wish It Would Rain" (1968). Unfortunately, ever-mounting internal pressures within the group, coupled with Ruffin's swelling ego, led to his dismissal from the group in late 1968. His solo...
