Album Review
Utah's the Used sound like a lot of different bands on their self-titled debut album. The sequencing of the disc seems intended to give the early impression that they are a metal band, but as the album goes on the music softens to hard rock and even ballads backed by strings. Similarly, lead singer Bert McCracken starts out howling, but by the third track, "Bulimic," he is affecting a Perry Farrell-like hoarse delivery, and later on he even sings in a nearly normal voice. (Sometimes, as in the seventh track, "A Box Full of Sharp Objects," he alternates approaches between verses and chorus.) The musical development mirrors the lyrics, in which McCracken begins with typical expressions of youthful frustration, culminating in the fifth track, "Poetic Tragedy," written in the third person, which depicts a suicide, but then begins to find satisfaction in romantic attachment to the point on the album's final credited track, "Pieces Mended" (there is also a hidden track long after the end), that he is proposing marriage. (Along the way, he drops the "F" word casually numerous times, but the album does not contain a parental advisory sticker.) So, The Used has a definite progression, musically and lyrically. But it is also all over the map in terms of musical approach. Some of it could be played on MTV beside Creed and Vertical Horizon, some of it recalls the rage of Fuel, and some goes even further into forbidding metal. That range should give Reprise Records, the band's label, plenty to work with, but it may confuse potential fans.

Finally!
Being the first person to review this, I'm glad to say that iTunes finally got the FULL version of this album. I already own the album, but one might be disappointed that the song you could previously not buy before, is album only. This song is "Pieces Mended." After that song, there is about 4 minutes of silence, then you here Bert playing with a hooker. After that, is the hidden track, "Choke Me," now available on Shallow Believer. So for $9.99, come on. The whole album rocks!
A Must Have Cd
I love this cd. I've listened to the used for many years, and this is still my favorite album. It has most of their biggest hits on it too. Like: 2. The Taste Of Ink 6. Buried Myself Alive 7. A Box Full Of Sharp Objects 8. Blue And Yellow Trust me you'll love them the first time you listen to them so buy the cd!!!
The Used
The Used is an amazing band. Their lyrics are deep and emotional, Bert's voice is perfect, Quinn and Jepha just flat out rock. This album really showcases their talents. Here's my track by track: 1. Maybe Memories: 5/5- An amazing start to the album. The lyrics are really hopeful and I love the changing between singing and screaming! Definitely one of the best on here. 2. The Taste of Ink: 5/5- Quite a different sound from the first track. Also a great song with awesome lyrics again. My favorite out of all their singles. The beat is just awesome. 3. Bulimic: 4/5- Not one of my favorites, but still a really good song. It helps a lot when you're mad at someone. Heh. Heh. "Goodbye to you, goodbye to you, you're wasting up my time..." The only thing I really have to say is that it can get repetitive. 4. Say Days Ago: 4.5/5- I don't know why, but I absolutely LOVE the vocals in this song. Or maybe it's the lyrics. I don't know, but there is just something about this song that makes me want to listen to it over and over. Love the guitar riffs too. :) 5. Poetic Tragedy: 4.9/5- Such an emotional song!! I cried when I first heard it...so sad. And hopeless. "Why? World? Why world? Hate! You! Hate you! Bye world!" So sad. It's awesome. 6. Buried Myself Alive: 4.5/5- I really dont know why I only gave this 4.5. The lyrics are awesome. The vocals are awesome. The guitar is awesome. Everything is awesome. Really fun to sing along to. Nuff said. 7. A Box Full of Sharp Objects: 5/5- Best screaming song on the album. It's just so intense! The perfect song for when you're angry. I mean, just look at the title. Sharp objects? Oh yes. What a beautiful thing indeed. 8. Blue and Yellow: 5/5- Another one of my favorites. This was written about Bert and Quinn's friendship. It's so beautiful, especially when you listen to it in that context. I love how it's sort of whispered, which adds to the whole feeling of the song. Definitely one of the best examples of The Used's incredible lyrics and emotion. 9. Greener With the Scenery: 3/5- My least favorite on the album. This one never really interested me. I'm not sure why, but it does have one of my favorite lyrics of all time: "I love you even though it isn't fair." It's so emotional. 10. Noise and Kisses: 5/5- I LOVE this song. It is my absolute favorite on the cd as of now. The lyrics are so intense. Especially the chorus. My favorite part is when Bert sings the chorus an octave higher. It's refreshing to hear him sing higher and again, love the singing/screaming intertwining. 11. On My Own: 5/5- My second favorite song on the album. It has a feeling of such lonelieness and desolace (yeah, duh, "On My Own") but it is so beautiful. It is a heck of a lot softer than the rest of the songs, and is just. awesome. My favorite part is when the lyrics just keep repeating "on my own". It sounds so eerie. 12. Pieces Mended: 4/5- I really don't have much to say. A decent close to an amazing album. Really awesome lyrics (I'm really starting to sound repetitive) and really awesome vocals. Polly- I'll let you figure this one out. All I'm gonna say is that I love Bert's laugh :D Choke Me: 5/5- Haha definitely worth the 9 minute wait. The hardest song on the album. Just awesome to listen to. The whole thing is screaming. It's wonderful. Love it. Overall: 5/5- The only reason I didn't rate more songs 5 was I didn't want every song to be rated the same. Haha :) Overall, this is an amazing, wonderful, magnificent album. My second favorite of all three albums. Can't wait for their new one, Artwork to come out!!
