Album Review

A Top Ten album for the group in early 1963, it really doesn't hold up today. Like many of their LPs, it demonstrates their versatility on faithful covers of a number of contemporary hits, ranging from rock to soul to easy listening. In every case, you're better off with the original versions. The CD reissue combines this album and their 1963 LP The Ventures in Space.

At their finest!

What do you mean "it really doesn't hold up today."? What utter crap. Two of the very finest Ventures albums are combined on this CD. I grew up on the Ventures (I starting playing my brother's Venture's albums when I was almost 3 years old - and when he would bust me playing his records, watch out)! "Telstar" and "Ventures in Space" capture the band in their absolute prime. It was never the TV themes that got to me, it was stuff like "The Bat", "He Never Came Back", "Telstar" (with Leon Russell on Hammond Organ, and numerous other classic rock pieces. These guys were ahead of their time. They took the time to experiment with new and "unfound" sound and the result is breathtaking - at least to me. When you're a 2 year old kid listening to this over the years and are still enthralled by it 45 years later, that's saying something!
"....it doesn't hold up today"........what a moronic comment! This was the early 60's, my friend, and stuff was busting out over the airwaves. "Ventures In Space" still gives me the goosebumps, and it scared the crap out of me as a kid. "Telstar" is wonderful and I still get a lump in my throat when I listen to it. Everything this band released that sounded "like magic" to me as a young kid is still magical today - even if I do know how they got their sound and understand the (limited) recording techniques! My $0.02. Oh - and after this, there was this group from England that came out. I think they were called, "The Beatles...."? After that, for me, the world turned upside down.....

Two classic albums for the price of one.

This compilation of ventures albums was actually my introduction to their music. While I have delved much deeper into instrumental and surf music since that purchase, it was their fantastic covers - and some good originals, too - that made me hungry for more. While the originals (by the likes of the Tornados, Lawrence Welk, The Pyramids, The Shadows or Jorgen Ingmann, depending on which side of the pond you're from) are at least as good as these covers (most are better, honestly) and worth tracking down, this is a good place to start for anyone interested in instrumental music.

Ventures In Space: 1 tween's holy grail

I remember asking for(The)Ventures In Space for Xmas; I must've been 10 or 11(my folks couldn't find it...I was crushed). 40 years later, I find a copy in my folks' attic, which my kid bro must've gotten to spite me. Listening, I find that it's indeed quite cool stuff, an influence on my listening tastes from Pink Floyd to the B52s, amongst others. & now I find it THROWN INTO THE DEAL w/ its predecessor, an album which showcases the V.'s versatility, but makes all the more remarkable the leap from former to latter album(& enables me to hear it w/o all those pops & crackles). So thanx to whoever put them together, & LONG LIVE THE VENTURES!

Not the first but definitely the most popular rock instrumental combo, the Ventures scored several hit singles during the 1960s — most notably "Walk-Don't Run" and "Hawaii Five-O" — but made their name in the growing album market, covering hits of the day and organizing thematically linked...
