Album Review

Smooth jazz guitarist Lee Ritenour gets the "best-of" treatment on this GRP compilation. While longtime fans will most likely already have these tracks, curious listeners may find it a nice place to start. Featuring a cross section of tracks Ritenour recorded during the '90s and early '00s, including "A Little Bumpin'," "Harlequin," and "Wes Bound," the only disappointment is that no new or unreleased cuts were included. However, Ritenour is a consummate jazz-pop melodicist and is still well represented, despite the inadequacies of this collection.

Being a jazz lover, unfortunately I have never really gotten into Lee Ritenour not because I don't like his work, just because I never got around to actually sitting down and listening to his stuff until a friend suggested (with great enthusiasm) to check out his work. I figured I would check out The Very Best Of Lee Ritenour to see if there was anything really worth pursuing and after listening to the previews, I immediately bought the first nine songs on this album. His tranquil guitar playing and mix of piano, bass and many others instruments really just drags you in. After only reviewing this album and it being a Best Of, I would definitely recommend Lee Ritenour to any jazz fan. Now I am off to check out the rest of his work which I am sure will be just as good if not better!!!

Lee Ritenour has long been the perfect studio musician, one who can melt into the background without making any impact. While he possesses impressive technique, Ritenour has mostly played instrumental pop throughout his career, sometimes with a Brazilian flavor. His few jazz efforts have found him essentially...
